SGA cabinet members resign due to obligations, transfer by Justin Boulmay

The Student Government Association planned to make changes within the organization as a whole before the end of the academic year, and its cabinet has changed in the last two months.

Secretary Joshua M. Walker resigned last month and Director of External Affairs April M. Stewart will leave after this semester.

SGA chose last Thursday to replace Walker with Appalachian Heights Apartments Senator Michael E. C. Schroeder.

Walker resigned last month due to obligations outside of SGA. He was not available for comment before press time.

Schroeder, like all other members of the cabinet, must be screened by the Rules Committee and then approved by the Senate before his appointment becomes permanent.

Vice President Lauren N. Linville said SGA chose Schroeder because of his leadership role in the “Dining with Durham” program and his participation in the office.

“So far, everything’s worked out really good,” Schroeder said.

“Michael’s been really friendly with the cabinet,” Linville said. “Everybody’s excited about him being here.”

Schroeder said he first got involved with SGA in part because of his brother, Christian Schroeder, who served as director of student affairs in the 1999-00 academic year and as chief of staff in 2001-02.

Stewart will leave in mid-February for Suzhou University.

“Basically, it’s a language program,” she said. “I’ll be intensively studying Mandarin while also taking a class on culture and traveling around.”

Stewart said she could have the opportunity to teach classes in English to Chinese students during her stay.

When she returns, Stewart said she hopes to become involved again with SGA as a senator.

Linville said two people, off-campus senator Matthew D. Whisenant and senator Joshua C. Walsh, have already applied for Stewart’s position.

“We want them in here before Thanksgiving so April can train them before Christmas,” she said.

“I don’t think [my leaving will] have any impact. Obviously, they’ll miss me, I hope. But I don’t think there’ll be any sort of glitch,” Stewart said.

“I don’t really feel like the organization has really skipped a beat. April will be missed, but we’re going to keep on going,” Linville said.

The only concern Linville said the cabinet had was finding someone who fit well with the other members of SGA and will work hard.

“I feel confident that we can find someone that, [though] they won’t be able to do the same job as April’s been doing, but I think in their own way they’ll be a great asset to the administration,” Linville said.

Also leaving is off-campus senator H. Dustin Bayard. Bayard announced his retirement at the Nov. 18 Senate meeting.
