Fundraiser sends Sigma Nu, football to Charlotte by Jennifer Schneider
Staff Writer
Sigma Nu hosts its 19th annual “Game Ball Run” Nov. 21 and 22 to raise money for the American Cancer society.

The roughly 100-mile trip from Boone to Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte will take two days and will be run by about 30 Sigma Nu brothers. The runners will be split into three teams. Each team member will take turns running followed by a van carrying the other brothers.

“They run as long as they can and then someone else takes their place and continues running,” Sigma Nu president Adam B. Pfanmiller said. “Our goal is that everyone runs half to a full mile.”

Senior D.J. McCabe said once the run is completed, Sigma Nu would present the check and game ball on the field right before the coin toss at the Panthers vs. Philadelphia Eagles game Nov. 30.

The charity route takes the runners down Highway 421 to Highway 115 and then Highway 77 to Charlotte. “I think it is longer than 321 but it is probably safer because it has more of a shoulder, especially up on the mountain,” senior Chip D. Jetton said.

Jetton is not a member of Sigma Nu but is running with the brothers.

“I got involved because my grandmother has cancer,” he said. “Seeing someone die of cancer is hard to watch.”

Jetton is raising money on his own, adding to the total check that will be presented to the American cancer Society.

He said he has received donations in both set amounts and by the number of miles he runs.

His goal is to run at least 20 miles and raise anywhere from $200 to $500.

“I think it is awesome that he is running,” Pfanmiller said. “I am really impressed.”

“Sigma Nu has been running the game ball for charity since its second year on campus,” McCabe said. “It’s a strong tradition and a great cause.”

Over the past 18 years, Sigma Nu raised more than $100,000 for the American Cancer Society through the Game Ball Run. This year they hope to raise at least $4,000.

“It all depends on the publicity,” Pfanmiller said. “We are doing better at getting the word out this year.”

“Adam made sure they did it right this year,” Jetton said. “They did a good job getting sponsors and I am glad they are actually running the whole way.”

Sponsors like Klondike Cafe, Toyota of Boone and Chestnut Veterinary Hospital donate at least $150 and get their names on the runners’ T-shirts.

Sigma Nu also received funding from individuals interested in helping the cause.

“I think it is great, getting to run down the interstate with cars driving by, honking at you,” McCabe said.

“I am excited to be able to help with the cause and make it a success,” Jetton said.
