Where's the plot?

Before "The Grudge" starts the audience is informed that a curse is born when an event takes place with a violent rage so unspeakable that the victim's ghost haunts whomever enters the house where the horrid act occurs.
The house remains haunted as the ghost of the victim holds their grudge toward anyone who moves into their home, even if they had nothing to do with the tragic death.

Frights are cheap

If I wanted to scare someone, and I mean truly terrify them, I would be clever and patient about it.
I would slowly sketch out a plan to bedevil someone's mind and imagination rather than appeal to the palpitations of their heart.
A physical response is fleeting, but a psychological response settles deeply within a person.
