RIAA subpoenas university for student downloaders

Three students at Appalachian State University will soon be brought to court for downloading copyrighted material off the Internet.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sent three letters to the university last week informing them a subpoena, that requests the names of three students who have downloaded materials, was forthcoming.

Alleged Stadium Lot assault closed
Victim requests case not be pursued

An alleged sexual assault occurred in Stadium Lot Sept. 24, but University Police said the case has been closed at the victim’s request.

“The victim’s wishes are not to have the case pursued,” University Police Chief Gunther E. Doerr said. He added he wasn’t clear on her reasons why.

There are few things as “college” as Nalgene bottles.

To encourage the use of reusable containers, the Appalachian State University Student Government Association (SGA) and Appalachian Food Services have now brought Nalgene bottles to campus Food Services locations.

'Fellows' program incorporates diversity

Appalachian State University’s Faculty Fellows Program has obtained two new members to help in its effort to diversify the campus and community.

Established in 1993, the Faculty Fellows Program offers a tenure track position to qualified individuals for any disciplines represented within the academic affairs division of the university.

ASU prof catches skull seller on eBay

You can buy a wide variety of items on eBay, anything from movies, shoes, musical instruments to an 18th century Hawaiian skull.

Unfortunately for Jerry David Hasson, Appalachian State anthropology professor Dr. Ann Kakaliouras is an avid eBay watcher.

Hasson has been charged with allegedly selling human remains (other than for medical purposes) which violates the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA).

Memorial held for ASU students

Tears ran down the smiling faces of those remembering loved ones at Appalachian State University’s annual Student Memorial Program held last Saturday.

Since 1991, family and friends of students who have passed away gather to comfort each other and remember those loved ones lost.

Organizations celebrate women, encourage voter participation

Community members, various campus organizations and musicians concerned about women’s issues and voter registration gathered for a Celebrate Women event on Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University Thursday.

National Organization for Women (NOW), National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) and students from Appalachian State’s Women and Leadership course, along with concerned citizens unaffiliated with the university, provided students with information on women and human rights issues and on Presidential candidates.
