Highlands money must benefit students

A three-year long court battle is finally over, and University Highlands is the victor.

University Highlands will now certainly receive approximately $300,000 in property taxes back from Watauga County.

Back in the distant days of August, The Appalachian called for that money to go to directly benefit students.

We still hold that position.

Bobcats bring NBA spirit back to Charlotte

When the Charlotte Hornets left Charlotte in 2002, I seriously think a piece of every Charlottean boy’s childhood was taken with them.

If you grew up in Charlotte, you followed the Hornets.

For one thing, there was no other professional sport in the city you could follow, therefore, the Hornets could make or break you socially.

After attending a Hornets’ playoff game in 1993, I proudly walked into my third grade classroom telling all of the glorious details of Alonzo Mourning’s last second jump shot that defeated the Boston Celtics.

Isabel's spices up High Country cuisine

Sometimes I just have to escape the monotonies of life, the scenery of Boone and the local food options.

Eating Black Cat burritos every weekend gets a little too repetitive for me.

This time, five friends and I trekked out to West Jefferson. It sounds far away but the drive is quite scenic. About a half an hour after leaving Boone, we arrived at Isabel’s, a quaint small town Spanish restaurant.
