Sports in Brief

VOLLEYBALL

The Appalachian State volleyball team gave the 15th-ranked University of Tennessee Volunteers all they could handle before eventually being over-powered in the fourth game Monday night.

The win moved the Vols’ record to 22-2 while ASU falls to 20-7.

After Tennessee jumped out to a 30-27 win in game one, the second game was just as tight. There were a total of seven ties in game two and neither team led by more than three points until late.

The Vols used a four-point run to take a 25-20 lead. Tennessee held on to win, 30-27 for the second game in a row.
ASU took game three from the Vols, but any chance of an upset quickly ended in the fourth game when Tennessee jumped out to a huge 25-10 lead.

The team plays tomorrow at UNC Greensboro and again Nov. 6 at Elon College.

CROSS COUNTRY

Both Appalachian men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second place Saturday at the SoCon Championship meet.
Chattanooga took first place for both the men’s and women’s meets.

Katie Sujkowski had the best finish for ASU, coming in at fourth place behind three UTC runners.

Carson Blackwelder finished seventh and had the fastest ASU male time.
Sujkowski, Jennifer Kelly and Kasey Smith earned All SoCon plaudits.
