Construction must not fall to politics

Construction. These days it is inescapable at Appalachian State University. With 70 percent of the campus under construction, it affects the day-to-day lives of students, faculty and staff.

But Appalachian does not exist in a vacuum. The massive construction projects on campus also have an effect on the Town of Boone.

A new state law gives Boone more say in campus construction projects. Used well, this law could simply insure a higher degree of cooperation between Appalachian and the surrounding community. Misused, it could cause frustration for everyone involved.

Where do current Republican intentions lie?

As of the press time, we’re two days into the Republican National Convention. Anyone watching the speeches should be careful. Many of the prominent speakers are saying one thing, while the actions of the party and its platform are saying quite another.

Last night saw two Republican moderates as the keynote speakers- Sen. John McCain (AZ) and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

Anyone knowing the Republican establishment’s history with McCain should have been scratching their head. McCain ran against Bush in 2000 in a very bitterly fought primary fight.

Alumni need to accept facts and move on

School spirit cannot be forced.

It’s not found in the color of a Web site or even how much black and gold-colored apparel is found in your residence hall closet.

You do not prove it by wearing black and gold Nike basketball shoes as you are being driven to the nursing home.

Having blue, red or even green in your wardrobe is OK. A lot of people look very nice in those colors, while gold makes them look like a circus attraction.

Fact is that are our school colors can be very loud and downright ugly at times.

There are other facts alumni must accept and move on.
