Mountaineers wrangle Wyoming Cowboys in season opener

Although the University of Wyoming bears the same Division I-A moniker of opening game opponents in years past, the talent level is not as formidable as Appalachian State University is accustomed to facing.

Two years ago, ASU played Marshall University, a team that was ranked in the top-25 in the country and boasted current NFL starting quarterback Byron Leftwich.

Last season, the team traveled to the University of Hawaii. Hawaii made a bowl game and finished second in Division I-A in passing yards per game.

Wyoming has neither an all-star quarterback nor a star-studded offense, but the ASU football team is treating them the same way they treated Marshall and Hawaii.

“We look at a [Division] I-A team as a I-A team,” senior wide receiver DaVon Fowlkes said.

“They’ve been struggling the last couple of years, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to be good this year. We looked at Wyoming the same way we looked at Marshall and Hawaii.”

Although this is the first ever meeting between Wyoming and Appalachian State, there will be some familiar faces on the Wyoming sideline.

Cross country teams push for conference victory

Appalachian State University’s Cross Country squads are ready for another run at a conference championship. After finishing second in the 2003 Southern Conference men’s championships and third in women’s, head coach, Mike Curcio still has his teams goals set to return from the SoCon Championships with a title this year.

It was a disappointing third place finish in SoCon last season, where the women suffered multiple injuries in the closing weeks before conference finals.

“We lost our number three runner to mono and a couple other top runners to tonsil surgery,” coach Curcio said about last season’s dismal end.

However, with the return of team-MVP Katie Sujkowski, who finished first in 2003’s SoCon Conference Championships, and a slew of healthy runners, women’s cross country fully expects to bring home what they missed by five points a year ago.
