UNC schools fail affordability test

North Carolina schools received a report card of their own last week.

The report, issued by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, rates the educational services of each state. North Carolina schools received a D- for affordability, but that grade was still above most of the country. Many states received an F.

“North Carolina has lost ground in providing students and families with an affordable higher education,” according to the report.

9-11 flag raises emotions in LLC

Unintended controversy exploded at the Living Learning Center (LLC) over a 9-11 commemorative artwork.

Three students erected a cross in the courtyard of the LLC with a torn and desecrated American flag draped around it.

Appalachian State University’s National Organization for Women, Department of Women’s Studies, ASU Women’s Center and ASU National Abortion Rights Action League sponsor “Get Out the Vote Week” to be held Sept. 27 through Oct. 1.

Rape defense class offered

According to a report released by the U.S. Department of Justice, about 3 percent of college females are victims of rape every school year.

This translates to approximately 350 rapes that occur on college campuses a year.

To help promote prevention of this crime, the Appalachian State University Police Department is sponsoring their annual Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) classes, a self-defense class for women.

Watauga County Artspace opens

The Watauga County Arts Council held an inception Tuesday evening at Blue Ridge Art Space, a new place for the Watauga community to enjoy the arts.

Art Space is scheduled to open Saturday.

ASU graduate discovers T-Rex

Study preparations began recently on an Appalachian State University graduate’s “small” discovery—a 3,500-pound (at the time of its death), 20-feet long Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton.

Although these figures may seem mammoth, they represent the size of one of the world’s smallest T-Rex specimens, discovered two-and-a-half years ago by 1994 Appalachian graduate Walter Stein.

Gamma Beta Phi: Where members benefit from volunteering

When someone mentions Gamma Beta Phi, it sounds like just another Greek organization.

However, education, life and friendship are the basis of Gamma Beta Phi, as the name comes from the Greek equivalent. The society recognizes and promotes academic excellence, leadership and service. Currently, there are approximately 700 active members in the Appalachian State University local chapter.
