ASU misses chance for construction funds

Appalachian State University was passed over during an allocation of construction funds by the North Carolina General Assembly during a year when the university again suffered reductions in its budget.

Fourteen schools in the UNC school system received direct appropriations from the General Assembly for construction projects related to health facilities. The total amount allocated between all the schools was approximately $400 million.

Brantz lends name to teaching award

Following 14 years of dedication to the direction of Appalachian State University’s Freshman Seminar program, Dr. Rennie W. Brantz was honored with an award in his name.

The Rennie W. Brantz Award for Outstanding Teaching in Freshman Seminar is a $500 award to be given annually to a Freshman Seminar professor who envelops exceptional characteristics that help further the program.

Students, Trustees mingle over dinner

Appalachian State University Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock decided to try something new at last Thursday’s quarterly trustee dinner.

“Dinner and a Trustee” brought students, faculty, staff and community members together for a night of dining and conversation with Appalachian’s Board of Trustees at the McKinney Alumni Center.

“This is truly an experiment,” Peacock said. “This gives trustees the opportunity to hear directly from students, staff, faculty and community leaders [in order] to make [this university] more wonderful than it already is.”

The Chalet is located on Boone Heights Drive beside the Watauga Medical Center's Wellness Center.

Chalet Triple Theatres to be torn down in October

As of Oct.1, the Chalet Triple Theatres will close its doors to make way for expansion of Watauga Medical Center’s Wellness Center.

“I personally don’t like the decision,” Chalet manager Stacy Cabe said.

Cabe said rumors that Watauga Medical Center would be tearing down the Chalet and some surrounding apartment buildings had been circulating for a few years.

Underage drinking continues to plague campus

Underage alcohol consumption continues on the Appalachian State University campus as reflected by the increase of alcohol citations issued.

The first two weeks of the Appalachian State school year resulted in a significant amount of alcohol and drug related violations.

Students chug milk for cookies

Ten residents gathered outside the residence hall yearning to be crowned the milk chugging champion of East Residence Hall.

East Hall hosted its second annual Resident Student Association (RSA) Milk Chugging Contest Sept. 1.

Competitors had their own strategy for winning. Some chose skim milk, hoping the low fat liquid would sit better with their stomachs and some chose to drink straight from their 2 percent jugs.

International students to take English test before admission

In September 2005, the Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) adds a required speaking component for all international students who hope to study in America.

Administered for over 40 years as the international standard, the TOEFL measures English proficiency in reading, listening and writing through a test offered on computers and paper around the world, according to the official Web site, www.toefl.com.
