Our Perspective... The Appalachian mourns this week for the passing of a longstanding member of the Boone community. The Chalet Theatre, the only place where students could watch movies for the same price as they could at the Regal but receive only half the quality, closed its doors and won’t be reopening them. We should add they’re not opening their doors because they’ve gone out of business, not because the doors were broken.
“I’m innocent.” Those were Kobe Bryant’s words a little more than a year ago after being charged with sexual assault. Now, as a surprising announcement, the star basketball player’s bout with the legal system, with exception to the civil case, is over without it ever really beginning. Bryant’s sexual assault case has dominated sports headlines over the past year. However, he is not the only star athlete ever to be charged with a serious crime. Bryant’s case brings to mind another case of the past 15 years: O.J. Simpson’s murder case. People have problems; it’s not a secret. As a society, we are enthralled with learning about what is going wrong with other people’s lives, whether they are celebrities or the two girls screaming down the hall. Like the car wreck you can’t turn your attention away from. But when did it become so trendy to be constantly pessimistic about everything that is happening in life? • Civil liberties or censorship? • Poster restrictions first step in wrong direction • Students should be able to make poster choices • Alumni seek relationships with current students • Wisdom lacking in alum commentary • Editor too left-wing for reality • Globalization commentary contradictory |
