Turchin Center unveils two exhibitions

With two new exhibitions, the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is challenging visitors to approach the artistic works in ways that may seem unfamiliar.

The new exhibitions, “The Capture of the Temporal: New Works in Photography and Video” and “In a New Light: America’s Brush with Impressionism” were designed particularly to inform visitors from the Town of Boone and from Appalachian State University of the possibilities of the artistic medium.

Queens return for spring show

Cher may not be on tour anymore, but Appalachian State University students could see the next best thing at "Lights, Camera, LIPSTICK! A Hollywood Showcase," the drag show and club night coming to Legends April 2 at 8 p.m.

This is the second drag show being presented at Appalachian State by Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians and Allies Associated for Diversity (B-GLAAD). The first was held in the fall and was a huge success.

"One of the administrators that came to the last show commented on how clean and classy the show was. There was also a market increase in numbers (of people who attended]," B-GLAAD Vice President of Activism Ally Scotton said.

"I think that the fall show was phenomenal," B-GLADD communications coordinator Aaron D. Sperling said. "The performance was great and the numbers [of people attended] were great. I expect this show to be at least the same, if not better."

This show will feature performers Jasmine, Celeste Starr, The Lady Serena, Coco Couture, Lexi Covington and others.

All of the performers except for Coco Courture are returning from the fall show.

Scotton said there will also be amateur performers.

The theme to the show is also different from fall.

Last semester's theme was Broadway and this semester, B-GLAAD is going for a Hollywood theme, which will include a red carpet entrance into Legends and Hollywood hills.

The performers will also be changing their performances from the last show to go along with the Hollywood theme. Other changes from the fall show will be an amateur show that will consist of students from Appalachian State.

"Right now we have three amateurs scheduled to perform but I have some other things in the works so that number will probably change," Sperling said.

Other events during the night will be door prizes and the DJ will be playing dance music after the performers are finished.

B-GLAAD has been sponsoring the drag show for approximately 10 years as their primary fundraiser for academic programs and social activities.

"I think it brings a culture to Boone that's not usually here," Sperling said. "I think certainly shows have gotten better as they progress."

"We're going to try to keep the show clean, presentable and fun for everyone and try to keep the numbers up. It's going to be a lot of fun," Scotton said.

Admission is $6 and the event is BYOB with a six-pack limit and students must be over 18 to attend.
