Installation events funded by donors

Ain’t no party like a Peacock party.

Thousands of dollars have been raised to finance a week of festivities to celebrate Kenneth E. Peacock’s Installation as the sixth chancellor of Appalachian State University.

Interim Vice Chancellor for University Advancement Jerry Hutchens said he and the chancellor raised $54,750 in donations for Installation events.

“We want to show the school off,” Hutchens said. “We want our Installation to be as good, or better, as any other school’s.”

NC State elects pirate

Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho! It’s a pirate’s life for students at North Carolina State University.

Will “The Pirate Captain” Piavis won 40 percent of the vote during the N.C. State Student Government Association presidential election two weeks ago and gained 58 percent of the vote in the run-off election.

Brooke Spada, a senior art education major, was “hired” as Appalachian State University’s first Candidate.

The two-week challenge had 15 students working to improve rooms at the Hospitality House, OASIS and the Watauga Youth Network.

Relay for Life raises more than $15K

Appalachian’s first annual Relay for Life was held on Duck Pond Field Friday. Hosted by Colleges Against Cancer, the relay had 25 teams participating, including East Hall Cancer Crushers, Alpha Delta Pi and Theta Chi.

Each team raised money for cancer research through donations and many teams held raffles or sold merchandise during the event.
