Baseball
Sometimes there are games teams would like to forget.
The series the ASU baseball team had against the College of Charleston last weekend is a time they would like to disregard.
In the double-header Saturday, the Cougars totaled up 42 hits and 43 runs. ASU suffered losses by scores of 24-4 and 19-3.
Kevin Butler and Jordan Ivey paced ASU with two hits each in the first game.
In the second game of the day, Julian Brown gave an early lead to the Mountaineers with a solo home run. Kevin Butler went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
ASU suffered another loss the next day in the final game of the series 7-2.
Travis Hunnicutt and Chris Baker each had RBI singles in the second inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Those two runs were the only ones they could muster.
Hunnicutt, Baker, Kevin Butler and Jimmy Mathias each had two hits to lead the Mountaineers’ offensive attack.
With the three losses, Appalachian falls to 7-22 overall and 3-9 in SoCon action.
Softball
Last weekend did not start off right for the ASU softball team.
Heading off the mountain for a weekend series against Georgia Southern University, the Mountaineers lost both games of a Saturday double-header, 5-2 and 8-0.
Kristyn Hurt was the offense for ASU, driving in two runs on a hit to left field to bring in Mary Lutz and Tiffany Hensley.
The second game was called due to the eight-run rule when Georgia Southern scored the ending run in the bottom of the fifth.
Keri Blackwelder took the loss to fall to 8-5 on the year. She struck out five but allowed eight of the 10 Eagles hits.
The series finale Sunday ended on a good note for Appalachian, with the team winning the game 4-3.
Going into the ninth inning, the scored was tied 2-2 and ASU took the lead off Lindsay Glover’s two-out double to extend the lead 4-2.
The Eagles scored one run on a wild pitch, then the Mountaineers finished off the game.
Glover led the offense for ASU going 4-for-5 with one RBI.
Meredith O’Connor took the win to improve to 3-6 on the season.
With the team’s first win in the SoCon, they now stand with an overall record of 13-23 and 1-8 in the conference.
