Women's Studies Sandwich Seminar

Maggie McFadden will be speaking on "Mothers of the Matrix: Women's Transatlantic connections in the nineteenth century." The seminar will be May 2 fron noon until 1:00 p.m. in the New River Room of the Student Union.

The meeting for the Student Yosef Club, open to both new and old members, will be April 28, 1997 at 5:00 p.m. in the Yosef Club Room at Owens Field House. We will elect officers for the 1997-98 school year.

End of Semester Schedule

The last day of classes for spring semester is Tuesday, April 29. Reading Day is Wednesday, April 30. Final exams are scheduled from Thursday, May 1, through Wednesday, May 7. Thursday, May 8, is the faculty grading period. Commencement exercises will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11.

Rental Textbook Return

May 9, 1997 is the last day to return rental textbooks to the University Bookstore. You will be charged for the replacement cost of the books if they are returned after May 9, 1997. You may purchase rental textbooks at replacement cost, if you so desire them.

Mountaineer Escort Service

The purpose of the Appalachian State University Mountaineer Escort Service is to provide safe and secure transportation to university students during the evening hours. The Escort Service is operated through the University Public Safety and Police Department, a division of Business Affairs. The office is located in the Traffic Department located on Stansberry Circle. The telephone number is 262-6438.

The service will be offered from 7:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., seven days a week during the fall and spring semesters when school is in session. The service will not operate during fall and spring breaks, holidays and between semesters.

Service will be provided for students on the main campus and the State Farm, Horn in the West and Williams parking lots. Service will be provided on an on-call basis; "first come, first served." Students must present a valid University I.D. Card to access this service.

Residence Life Employment Opportunities

Graduate/Senior Position

The Department of Housing and Residence Life is seeking a Graduate/Senior to assist with the supervision of 10-12 student desk assistants for the 1997-98 academic year. This individual should be able to work 25-30 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Primary responsibilities would include hiring, training, evaluation, discipline, and coordination of student work schedules for academic year, breaks, and holidays. Other duties would include design and development of departmental calendar, maintaining judicial records, appreciation/recognition, and other duties as assigned.

Applicants should be self-motivated, responsible, and possess strong leadership and communication skills. Prefer someone with Windows 95 and Word 6.0 experience and good typing and organizational skills. If interested, please submit your resume in person to Denna Miller, third floor John Thomas Hall. The Department of Art will present a lecture by Professor Barthosa Nkurumeh. Professor Nkurumeh received his formal training at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Since the 1970's, he has worked in several media including metalsmithing, sculpture, graphic design, printmaking, and painting. He will speak about his art and place it in the context of contemporary Nigerian art. He will emphasize the rule and position of the artist in the changing Nigerian and global communities.

Paul, a young black con man, insinuates himself into the lives of a wealthy New York couple, claiming that he knew their son in college and is himself the son of Sidney Poitier. The couple soon discovers the lie and finds that he has pulled the same trick on their friends. The play is both hilarious and painful as it explores the darker issues of family life in the 1990s.

Summer Employment Opportunity

Appol Corps Project Assistant
20 hours per week
beginning end of May and ending August 16

Requirements
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows and Microsoft Access, and integration of the two programs

Responsibilities
• Managing several databases; word processing and document management
• Creating and managing a filing system for all correspondences, planning documentation, database reports, etc.
• Coordinating correspondences between Appol Corps leaders, coordinators and faculty
• Updating the Appol Corps Resource Manual
• Coordinating and scheduling of all facilities associated with Phase II Orientation
• Assigning over 2,000 freshman to group according to specific guildelines
• Assisting in other projects associated with the successful implementation of Freshman Orientation Phase II
