Growth/Counseling Groups

These counseling and psychological Services Center groups are designed to provide growthful experiences for both students who want to resolve specific concerns and those who want to improve relationship abilities and feel better about themselves.

Below are brief descriptions of various groups offered at the center and meeting times. Groups meet weekly and are generally limited to 6-8 people. To arrange to participate in a group or for more information, contact the Counseling and Psychological Services Center at 262-3180.

    Understanding Self and Others

      Three Group Times - Tuesdays, 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.; Tuesdays, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

      Members explore patterns of relating to self and others with the aim of developing greater understanding and acceptance of themselves and others. Presenting issues vary widely from depression, anxiety, issues of family conflict or abuse, etc. Students who want to resolve specific concerns as well as those seeking personal growth are welcome.

    Understanding Self and Others ­ For African American Women

      Mondays, 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.

    Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group

      Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

      This group is for students diagnosed with ADD. Issues to be explored may include strategies for coping with ADD in class and in relationships, medication problems, study, organizational strategies, and staying on track.

    Accepting Self Ñ Body and All

      Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

      This group is for students with concerns about their body image and negative feelings about self. Individuals who are engaging in or recovering from bulimia or anorexia are welcome. The group will include information, education, support, and counseling activities that address eating disorders, negative body image, and low self esteem.

    Gay, Lesbian, and Bi-Sexual Support Group

      Tuesdays, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Meeting Place: Equity Office

      This group is an opportunity for gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual students as well as those who are questioning their sexual orientation to come together. Issues to be explored may include sexuality, relationships, homophobia, coming out, plus any other areas of interest or concern.

    Sexual Trauma Group

      Mondays, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

      A group offering support, therapy, and information for those who have experienced any negative effects from trauma of a sexual nature including sexual abuse, sexual assault, or sexual harassment.

    Therapeutic Weekend for Self Enhancement

      Friday, October 17, 5:30 p.m. ­ Sunday, October 19, 4:30 p.m.

      This group will be a 20 hour intensive therapeutic experience for those who are committed to enhancing knowledge and acceptance of self, improving styles of relating to self and others, and overcoming problems or blocks that limit personal potential.

Wesley Foundation

You are invited to Wild Wesley Week '97, underway this week. There will be a dinner and a movie at 6 p.m. today, a houseparty at 9 p.m. Friday, and a Picnic on the Parkway on Saturday at 11 a.m. For all events, meet at the Foundation at Boone United Methodist Church.

Walk for Awareness

The Eighth Annual Walk For Awareness will be held Sept. 2, at 9 p.m. The walk commemorates the tragic murder of Jeni Grey and makes a statement of caring and commitment about the Appalachian community. Those participating should meet at the steps of the B.B. Dougherty Administrative Building. The walk will then proceed to the Jones House in downtown Boone. Please bring candles or flashlights. The walk is silent, a time for comitment, thinking and introspection. White ribbons will be distributed to all partipants to wear the next day. A resolution board will be placed in the Student Union on Wednesday, Sept. 3, and Thursday, Sept. 4, from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. for individuals or groups to place resolutions. Lunch With Uncle Sigmund

The Counseling and Psychological Services Center will present "Lunch With Uncle Sigmund" on Mondays at noon in the New River Room in Plemmons Student Union. Center staff will present informtion and lead discussions on psychoeducational topics. Topics and dates for September are:

  • Sept. 22 How to Help When Someone Drinks or Drugs Too Much

University Bookstore

The University Bookstore will observe the following operating schedule:

  • August 21 - 22 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • August 23 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • August 25 - 26 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.


Whitney Elizabeth Hunter Scholarship

Eligible undergraduates who have completed their freshman year are encouraged to apply for the Whitney Elizabeth Hunter Memorial Scholarship. The award carries a $1,000 annual stipend and is renewable provided a 3.0 GPA is maintained. Applicants must have a 3.) GPA overall, have taken at least one Honors class at Appalachian, and be a participant in theater and broadcasting, or student government activities at the state or campus level. Financial need is taken into account in the awarding of this scholarship. Applications are available in the University Honors office, Coffey Hall, or the Dean's Office, College of Fine and Applied Arts, Wey Hall. Application deadline is Sept. 15. Community Action Program

The Community Action Program (formerly known as Residence Hall Security) has job openings for interested students at Appalachian State University. The hours you must work are 12 a.m. midnight to 5 a.m. Students can create their schedule, study while they work. Starting pay is $5.35 per hour with raises each semester. Student Health Service

Fall semester operating hours for the Student Health Service at Appalachian State University are:

    Weekdays

    • Out-patient Clinic Monday - Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
    • Pharmacy Services Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m.-noon, 1:15-4 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-noon, 1:15-4 p.m.
    • Appointment Scheduling Monday-Friday 8-11 a.m., 1-3:30 p.m. Note: For direct dialing to the apointment secretary, call 262-6577.
    • Allergy Clinic Monday, 8-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, 1-3:30 p.m. Thursday, 8-11:30 a.m.

The Health Service opens at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesdays

To inquire about immunization records, call the immunization secretary at 262-6578 from 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 4 p.m.

After-hours Clinic Monday-Friday 4 p.m. to midnight

    Weekends

    • Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Sunday 2 to 10 p.m.

The Health Service is closed between the hours of midnight and 8 a.m. If you have an emergency while the Health Service is closed, please contact University Police at 262-2150 or report to the Watauga Medical Center Emergency Room.


Theatre & Dance Audition

The Appalachian State University Theatre & Dance Department will hold auditions for the following productions. For more information, contact the department at 262-3028.

Senators Needed

The Appalachian State University Student Government Association needs senators. If you are interested, there will be an information session on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Watauga River Room of the Plemmons Student Union. Nominations will be accepted starting today, Aug. 20. The nominating period ends Sept. 5. Senate elections will be held Sept. 9 and 10. There will be a mandatory Senate training session on Sept. 11. The first Senate meeting will be Sept. 16. Nomination forms are available in the SGA office, 2nd floor, Plemmons Student Union.

Study Abroad

Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Costa Rica, England, Fiji, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Togo: These are just some of the places you could go if you choose to study abroad. Come to the Office of International Programs in I.G. Greer and check out your options. Earn credit toward your degree while studying abroad. The application deadline for spring semester 1998 is August 25.


Visitation Vote for Residence Halls

Visitation voting for residence halls will be held on Thursday, August 21 from 10:00 p.m. - 12 midnight, and Friday, August 22 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in residence hall lobbies. You may vote for one of the three visitation options listed below. Note that the required percentages are the percentage of total residents that must vote for the option, not the percentage of voting residents.

Peer Career

Career Counseling: The Peer Career Center is open for students to stop by and work on making good career decisions. No appointments are required. Hours are:

  • Wednesday 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Outreach Programs: The Peer Career staff is also available to present other programs to your classes, organizations, teams, or residence halls. Swimming Classes

Two sections of lifeguard classes, PE 1590-101 and 102 (call numbers 14316 and 13629), will be offered for two credit hours. The first will be taught Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. The second will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 - 3:15 p.m.

One section of swimming instructors class, PE 3090-101 (call number 13651) will be offered for two credit hours on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 11:00 - 11:50 a.m.

One section of lifeguard instructors class, PE 3531-101 (call number 14320) will be offered for two credit hours on Fridays from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m.
