A.P.I.C.S.

A.P.I.C.S., a non-profit organization, will be holding its open house on Tuesday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m. in Raley Hall room 3015. Pizza and drinks will be served.

A.P.I.C.S. consists of 70,000 members nationwide. A.P.I.C.S. is comprised of students and professionals in the fields of production/operations management, materials, and integrated resource management areas. The Appalachian State University student chapter recently received one of only six gold medal awards. They received national recognition for this award.

Being a member of A.P.I.C.S. can provide knowledge in resource management through speakers and plant tours. Joint meetings with the Parent Chapter in Hickory help students develop networking skills. Internships are available to students. Another benefit of being involved with A.P.I.C.S. is being certified in production and inventory management. Jobs and scholarships opportunities are also available.

New York Loft

Stay at the New York Loft, located in the Soho District of Lower Manhattan. Students, faculty, and staff can stay for $20 per person per night. Alumni and non-Appalachian persons can stay for $27 per person per night. Reservations can be made a year in advance. For reservations or additional information, contact the Instructional Technology Center at 262-2132.


Peer Career

Career Counseling: The Peer Career Center is open for students to stop by and work on making good career decisions. No appointments are required. Hours are: Outreach Programs: The Peer Career staff is also available to present other programs to your classes, organizations, teams, or residence halls. Various programs and activities are available to assist in learning about oneself, the world of work, and decision making. Call 262-2029 for more information.

The weight room will be open the same hours as the facility, except from 9:00 a.m. - noon, Monday through Friday. The gym and indoor track are available for use at all times the facility is open except on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Parking and Paving on Academy Street

The paving crew will be grinding up asphalt in front of Founders Hall on Academy Street on Tuesday, September 9, 1997, and may start to pave this area. There will be no access to Founders or the administration lots during this repaving. Please park in Cannon, Hoey, Legends, or on Rivers Street temporarily.

If you have questions, please check with traffic personnel in the area or call the traffic office at 262-2878.


ACT

ASU students interested in volunteer opportunities are invited to attend an orientation session for ACT (Appalachian and the Community Together). Each session will provide an opportunity to learn about local needs working with community, people, and the environemtn. Volunteering your time and talents is an excellent way to explore your interests, build your resume, and it also feels good! For more information, call 262-2193. Orientation dates are as follows. Diversity Advocates

The Multicultural Center and Residence Life are looking for students interested in becoming "Diversity Advocates." As Diversity Advocates, students will participate in training sessions, facilitate diversity-related programs and discussions, and mediate cross-cultural conflicts. If you are willing to grow in your understanding of difference and want to promote diversity on campus, this position may be for you. Applications are available at the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, 2nd floor Plemmons Student Union. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on September 8. University Writing Center

Leadership 101

If you don't know what you want, you will probably never get it. Goals give you direction and help you get where you're going. If setting goals is a problem for you and your organization, you might be interested in Leadership 101, a leadership series for club and organization members. The series begins Tuesday, September 16, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., in the Watauga River Room of Plemmons Student Union.

Career Development Center

To participate in on-campus recruiting, or to give employers an opportunity to view your resume online, you must first register on our new Internet service, 1st Place. Call the office for self-registration information, or attend an orientation. Those wishing to attend an orientation must sign up in the CDC at least a day in advance.


Lunch With Uncle Sigmund

The Counseling and Psychological Services Center will present "Lunch With Uncle Sigmund" on Mondays at noon in the New River Room in Plemmons Student Union. Center staff will present informtion and lead discussions on psychoeducational topics. Topics and dates for September are: Call the Counseling Center at 262-3180 for more information.


Whitney Elizabeth Hunter Scholarship

Eligible undergraduates who have completed their freshman year are encouraged to apply for the Whitney Elizabeth Hunter Memorial Scholarship. The award carries a $1,000 annual stipend and is renewable provided a 3.0 GPA is maintained. Applicants must have a 3.) GPA overall, have taken at least one Honors class at Appalachian, and be a participant in theater and broadcasting, or student government activities at the state or campus level. Financial need is taken into account in the awarding of this scholarship. Applications are available in the University Honors office, Coffey Hall, or the Dean's Office, College of Fine and Applied Arts, Wey Hall. Application deadline is Sept. 15. Community Action Program

The Community Action Program (formerly known as Residence Hall Security) has job openings for interested students at Appalachian State University. The hours you must work are 12 a.m. midnight to 5 a.m. Students can create their schedule, study while they work. Starting pay is $5.35 per hour with raises each semester.
