Education Discussion

"A Life in School: What the Teacher Learned" will be presented at Appalachian State University by Jane Tompkins Tues., Sept. 16. Tompkins' lecture is based on a holistic approach to teaching, specifically in higher education. A Duke University English professor, Tompkins will present her own educational history and her experience as a student and a teacher. The lecture will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the student union's Calloway Peak Room. The public is welcome to attend the lecture and the reception that follows.

Karate Competition

Various karate champions will be on hand Sept. 12-13 as Appalachian State University's Varsity Gymnasium hosts The Appalachian Open, a karate competition dubbed "Shogun Day." The competition begins Friday at 8:30 p.m. with events in breaking, musical forms, self-defense and team forms. Saturday's highlights include competitions in weapons, forms and sparring from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and adult black belt competition and demonstration beginning at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. The event is open to the public. Spectators will be charged $7 at the door or can purchase a two-day pass for $12. Call 265-4549 or (910) 685-KICK for more information.

Book Sale

New books discounted from 40 to 70 percent will be sold at a Belk Library book sale Sept. 17-19. Browsers are welcome to peruse the sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 119 of the library. The sale will feature approximately 200 titles on subjects ranging from sports to crafts. Bestsellers and children's titles will also be available for purchase. The sale is sponsored by Reading's Fun Ltd. Sale proceeds will be used to purchase library materials. Call 262-4973 for additional details.
