Appalachian State University faculty and their research projects in various areas will be highlighted in the 1997 Social Forums Series, which begins Sept. 25 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center.
Sponsored by the Appalachian Humanities Program, the forums are open to the public and will cover topics ranging from African democracy to recovery after brain damage.
The first forum on Sept. 25 features a poetry reading from Lynn Doyle, associate professor of English. All forums run 5:15-6 p.m. with a cash bar opening at 4:30 p.m.

"Feminist Issues in Human Genetics: Negotiating the Boundary between Choice and Content" will be presented by Davidson College professor Rosemarie Tong Sept. 23 in Appalachian State University's Whitener Hall. Tong's lecture will be held at 8 p.m. in room 103.
Tong, Davidson's Thatcher Professor of Medical Humanities and Philosophy, is the author of "Feminist Approaches to Bioethics" and "Feminist Thought: A Comprehensive Introduction."
Tong will also speak to the university's feminist theories class on Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. in B-1 East Hall.

The Human Performance Lab in the health, leisure and exercise science department offers low-cost, high-quality fitness tests to students, faculty, staff and the Boone community.
Tests include EKG treadmill tests to determine heart and
lung fitness, $50; metabolic tests, $20; and body fat/ideal weight tests,
$10. All tests are conducted 4-6 p.m. in Varsity Gymnasium on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Farthing Auditorium will play host to a variety of sounds when the Steely Pan Steel Band performs its repertoire Oct. 17 at 8 p.m.
Director Scott Meister oversees the annual concert, which will deliver a blend of calypso, classical, mountain, and other musical styles.
