Nashville
Songwriters Concert
"It all begins with a song" on Saturday, October 4, when four of Nashville's
most noted performing songwriters appear in concert to benefit the Appalachian
State University School of Music. The proceeds are earmarked for the new
recording studio facilities currently under construction for the university
Music Industry Studies program. Don Henry, Tim Bays, Karen Staley, and
Wayland Patton will share their songs and stories at ASU's Farthing Auditorium
at 7:30 p.m.
Dwight Yoakam, Faith Hill, Randy Travis, Kathy Mattea, Pam Tillis, Tracy
Byrd, Doug Stone and Ray Charles are just a few of the artists who have
recorded the compositions of these gifted songwriters. Wayland Patton's
song Land of the Living is the current single release by Pam Tillis. Karen
Staley, recently signed as a recording artist to Warner Brothers Records,
won the 1996 Song of the Year Award from the Academy of Country Music for
Tracy Byrd's Keeper of the Stars. An exclusive songwriter for Sony/ATV/Tree
Music, Tim Bays was again invited to perform on this year's Kerrville Folk
Festival's main stage where he debuted songs from his newest release, Better
Than The TV. Don Henry earned a Grammy Award for writing the Kathy Mattea
classic Where've You Been, and he is putting the finishing touches on an
album of new songs due out early in 1998. You may call for tickets at 1-800-841-ARTS.
MasterCard and Visa are accepted.
The ticket price for the concert is $15 for general admission and $6
for Appalachian students with a student ID. Advance tickets are available
from the Farthing Auditorium ticket office and the ASU School of Music.
Tickets also may be purchased at the door.
Also on October 4, these writers will participate in a songwriting seminar
from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the Rosen Concert Hall at the School of Music.
Admission to the seminar is free for ASU students; $5 for Nashville Songwriters
Association Internation (NSAI) members; $10 for the public. Tickets will
be available at the door. For those with an interest in the art of songwriting,
don't miss the opportunity for an "up close and personal" look at the songs
and successful careers of the talented artists.
