Board of Trustees

 Appalachian State University's Board of Trustees elected new officers this semester, with Bryan Houck of Gastonia named chairman of the board.

 Houck has been a board member since 1991. A 1954 Appalachian graduate, Houck is a retired assistant vice president for Southern Bell.

 Other officers elected include Wayne Duncan of Raleigh, vice chairman, and Suzanne Botts of Charlotte, secretary.

 Duncan, a board member since 1993, is a 1965 Appalachian graduate and serves as executive vice president of First Citizens Bank in Raliegh. Botts became a board member in 1994.

 All have been elected to a one-year term.

 The Board of Trustees also welcomed two new members Sept. 5. Ben D. Quinn of Atlantic Beach, Glenn W. Wilcox Sr. of Asheville and Robert G. Fox Jr. of Mint Hill were sworn in this month.
 

Visiting Writers

 Clifton Taulbert will read memoirs of his life growing up as an African-American in the Midwest as part of the Appalachian State University Visiting Writers series tonight in the student union.
 
 Taulbert will read in the Linville Falls Room at 7:30 p.m.

 His works include "Watching Our Crops Come In," "Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored," and "The Last Train North," a Pulitzer Prize nominee.

 Taulbert's reading is sponsored by the university's Humanities Program, Special Forum Series, multicultural center and Western Carolina University. Admission is free.

ROTC 5K Road Race

 Appalachian State University's ROTC Battalion will sponsor a 5K Road Race Sept. 27 at 8:30 a.m. throughout the town of Boone.
 
 Registration fees are $10 for students and $13 for non-students.

 Prizes will be awarded in male and female age divisions and gift certificates will be awarded through random drawings.

 The 5K race is in conjunction with the Olde Boone Streetfest to be held this weekend.

Honors Recital

Graduate student Paige West will perform tonight at 8 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall as part of the Appalachian State University's School of Music's Honors Student recital program.

West, a music performance major, plays woodwind with the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra and the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, both of Tenn. She also performs with the University Wind Ensemble.

Tonight, she will perform various selections on bassoon.
