“The Heart of Tradition”

Homecoming 1997, held this weekend on the Appalachian State University campus, will offer students a variety of options to celebrate the theme, “Homecoming ’97: The Heart of Tradition.”

Highlights of Homecoming weekend include tomorrow’s parade at 4 p.m. and Saturday’s football game and related events, set to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Look for advertisements across campus or information in The Appalachian for further Homecoming details.

Halloween Activities

Students who choose to stay in Boone for Halloween are not without options for fun, as several events will be offered on campus to celebrate the event.

A double-screening of horror films “Scream” and “The Exorcist” will be shown by APPS in I.G. Greer this weekend, with “The Exorcist” shown first at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission for one or both films is $1.

APPS will also hold a Fright Night Halloween Costume Contest Friday in Legends. Admission is $2. Cash prizes will be awarded for costume winners.

Jackopierce Farewell

The farewell tour of Jackopierce comes to Appalachian State University Saturday as part of APPS Stage Shows in Legends.  The show begins at 9 p.m., with student advance tickets for $7, and $9 tickets for non-students and at the door.

150-Man Study

A research team needs 150 male volunteers by November to continue a project comparing different methods of body fat measurement. The study is conducted by Appalachian’s Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science and hopes to determine if a bioelectrical measurement tool works as effectively as underwater weighing.

All volunteers will receive a free reading of their body fat levels. Volunteers must be 18-72 years old and can be of any weight, but must be willing to be weighed underwater without feelings of panic.

Tests will run from November until all men are tested, approximately March 1998. To sign up, call 262-3140.

“Sylvia”

“Sylvia,” a romantic comedy and recent Broadway hit, will be performed Oct. 30-Nov. 3 by Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Shows will be held at 8 p.m. in the Greer Arena Theatre on campus.

The play tells the story of a strange love triangle between a man, a woman and a dog. Student tickets are $3 and all others are $5.
Tickets can be purchased through the Valborg Theatre box office, or by calling 262-3063.
