ASU celebrates Homecoming 'In the Heart of Tradition'

Beth Bliss, News Editor

Winners in the Homecoming competition were announced and the 1997 Homecoming King and Queen were crowned during Appalachian State University’s Homecoming football game, against Chattanooga University Saturday.

Total attendance for the 41-7 Mountaineer victory was 16,561.

The King and Queen were determined from five finalists in both categories.

Senior Jason Yepko was announced as the 1997 Homecoming King. Yepko represented the Panhellenic Council.

Senior Jennifer Mitchell, nominated by Delta Zeta sorority, was announced as the 1997 Homecoming Queen. Yepko and Mitchell were honored by Chancellor and Mrs. Francis T. Borkowski, as well as former king and queen Mason Reuter and Melanie Covington.

Student Government Association President Fernando Little and Vice-President Jake Parker were also present at the half-time ceremony.

Also announced at the Homecoming game were the winners of the Homecoming competition.

Last week, residence halls and campus clubs and organizations participated in various events to earn points toward an award in the competition. Activities included a canned food drive, a lip sync contest and a Homecoming parade float competition.

The competition was categorized by different organizations. Of 19 dormitories, Coffey Hall won first place in the residence hall competition, earning the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup. Newland Hall took second place honors.

Of the win, Coffey Hall RSA President Erin Atkins said Coffey Hall found success due to the hard works of its residents.

“A lot of our success can go out to the enthusiasm and energy of the freshmen in the building,” said Atkins.

Atkins also attributed the win to the work of Coffey Homecoming committee chairperson Anna DeCasper, as well as to the involvement of Resident Director Maria Zale.

In addition to the residence hall competition, awards for overall excellence in Homecoming participation were announced, with winners in three categories: Greek organizations, clubs, and student development groups.

Winners of this award were Alpha Phi sorority, Appalachian Student Ambassadors and the Appalachian Popular Programming Society.

The winner of the Chancellor for a Day Contest, sponsored by the Student Ambassadors, was also announced before half-time.

Junior Brandon Frye will switch places with Chancellor Borkowski Nov. 24. Frye entered the competition last week, as Student Ambassadors collected donations for the Watauga County Hunger Coalition.

The day’s festivities were preempted by tailgating activities in the stadium parking lot and on Duck Pond Field, adjacent to Trivette Hall.
