Canned Food Drive

The Black Graduate Student Association will hold a canned/coin food drive on Monday, November 3 through Thursday, November 6.  The time is 11:00 am until 1:00 pm in the Student Union and in Welborn Cafeteria.  Please bring canned goods and/or coins to contribute.  Proceeds will go to the Hospitality House in Boone.

Does your organization publicize using the same old boring flyers?  Come get new publicity ideas that will attract attention, on Thursday, October 28, from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Watauga River Room of Plemmons Student Union.

Outdoor Programs

Volunteers Needed to clean up University Woods

Outdoor Programs invites you and your friends for an afternoon of work and play in Appalachian State University's own University Woods.  Come join us on Friday, November 14, for some necessary work in the University Woods, and an opportunity to climb the Alpine Tower.  The event begins at 1 pm. and lasts until 5 p.m.  Outdoor Programs will provide tools, Alpine Tower instructions and equipment, refreshments, maps of the trail system, and plenty of support.

You do not need to call and reserve a space, just meet at the Alpine Tower.  Come prepared to work and climb, and come rain, snow, or shine.

Call the Outdoor Programs Office at 262-2475 for more information.  If you need transportation, come by the4 Outing Center on Friday, Nov. 14, from 1 pm to 5 pm and we will provide transportation on request.

Pieces of She

"Pieces of She," a student conceived and produced show celebrating the contributions of women to the arts, is currently accepting submission of original work by women to be produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance in the I.G. Greer Theatre in the spring semester.

The Department of Theatre and Dance seeks monologues, poems, scens, short stories, musical compositions, dance pieces, and visual art for the production.  Written work must be adaptable to the stage.  Contributors should think of "Pieces of She" as a performance collage.  Plans are to use as wide a variety of work as possible in this very eclectic show.

Written submissions should be sent to Kristy Barstow in the Department of Thatre and Dance.  Please attach a cover sheet with your name and phone number, or another suitable way the Department can contact you.  Please do ont place your name on the actual submission.

If you have a proposal or an idea for visual art, dance, or musical compositions, or if you have any questions about submission, contact jan Thrasher at 264-1455 and leave a message.  Deadline for submissions is November 17.  Those who submit a selected contribution will be contact by the end of fall semester.

Truman Scholarships
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation is the federal memorial honoring our thirty-third President.  Each year the Foundation awards about 85 merit-based scholarships to college students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public and/or government service.  Each Truman Scholar receives up to $30,000 in scholarship support, priority admission, and supplemental financial support to top-level graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special employment opportunities with the federal government.  Candidates must be in their junior year, have outstanding academic records, and be nominated by the University.  The awards are highly competitve and will require a lengthy written application process.  Students wishing to be nominated must see Dr. Donarld B. Saunders, University Honors Program, Coffey Hall, as soon as possible, or call 2083 for more information.

Udall Scholarships
Morris K. Udall Scholarships offer up to $5000 to undergraduate students interested in careers in environmental public policy, health care, or tribal public policy.  The Udall scholarships have been authorized by the United States Congress and established by the National Environmental Policy Foundation to honor Congressman Udall's legacy of public service.  Each year the Foundation awards about 70 merit-based scholarships to college sophomores or juniors who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in environmental public policy, and to Native Americans or Alaska natives planning careers in health care or tribal public policy.  The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a mazimum of $5000 for one academic year.

Pre-Spring Room Changes
Pre-spring room changes will be made "on paper" from November 19-21 and 24-25 from 9 am - 4 pm.  If you want to make a pre-spring room change:

  1. Discuss the situation wiht your present roommate.
  2. Map out the room change, considering dates and times to move.
  3. Bring all persons affected by the proposed change to the Housing Office, room 319, John E. Thomas hall to sign forms.
  4. Plan to follow through with the change by the end of the semester.  The space you are leaving needs to be completely ready for another student moving in at the beginning of spring semester.  Your change must be made prior to your departure at the end of fall semster.
  5. Coordinate time and completion of check-in with new RA and schedule a check-out time with old RA.
The actual move must take place at the end of the semester when spaces become vacant.

Leaving at the End of Fall Semester
If you will be leaving your residence hall assignment at the end of fall semester for one of the following reasons, you must notify the department of housing as soon as possible.

I you do not notify the department housing of your departure, you will be responsible for spring semester room fees.  Please also schedule a check-out time with your resident assistant.

Please sign out with housing by November 25, 1997, 4:00 pm.

Glamour's Top Ten College Women Competition
Win $1,000 cash, meetings with professionals in your field, and national recognition in Glamour Magazine's 1998 Top Ten College Women Competition.  Anny woman who is a full-time junior is eligible to enter the competiion, which recognizes students for their leadership experience, campus and community involvement, academic excellence, and unique goals.  Applications due by January 31, 1998, are available in the Equity Office.


Praxis Exam Requirements

For those taking the Praxis exam this Saturday, November 8, please remember that a picture ID with a signature, such as a driver's license, is required for admission.  A student ID can be used as a backup only.


Peer Career

Applications are now being accepted for Peer Career Counselors for spring semester.  Peer Career Counselors are undergraduate and graduate wtudents who staff the Peer Career Center five hours per week and attend a weekly staff meeting.  Sixteen hours of intensive training in career counseling skills is provided.  This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with people, to advance your own career development, and to make lasting friendships.  Applications are available at the peer Career Center and are due December 1, 1997.  For information, call 262-2029.


Resident Assistant Positions

Application packets are now available for Resident Assistant positions for the 1998-99 academic year.  Application packets can be picked up from the Department of Housing and Residence Life on the third floor of Thomas hall.  Completed applications must be returned by January 20, 1998.  Should you have any questions, please contact Tom Hilgers at 262-2536.


Video Series

Don't miss the presentation of "That the World May Know," a video series presented by Historian and Teacher Ray Vander laan.  This is a melding of history, archaeology, and the Bible times.  This series was put together by Focus on the Family.  The meeting will be held in Kerr Scott hall, room 122, starting on November 4.  The time is 7:30 - 9:00 pm.  All are welcome.  For more information, call 264-7968.
