An Appalachian State University student suffered several injuries Tuesday, when his bicycle collided with a car at the intersection of Howard and Brown Streets in Boone.
Witnesses said senior Jeffrey L. Jordan was riding his bike down Howard Street at around 12:20 p.m., when a car on Brown Street attempted to pull out.
Shelly P. Lee was trying to see around the corner for any traffic when Jordan hit the front end of Lee’s car, according to witnesses.
Jordan hit the windshield and landed on his back on the road. He was not wearing a helmet.
Seniors Joel Brantham and Scott Fields were two eyewitnesses to the accident.
Both were walking home from class when they saw Jordan hit the car. “I saw him slam on (his) brakes and try to avoid the car,” said Brantham.
Fields said, ‘The bike looked like it stood up and he went over the handlebars.”
Fields directed traffic while Brantham made sure that Jordan was all right. The driver, Lee, immediately went to a local house to call for help.
Jordan was taken to Watauga Medical Center and remains there with several injuries, including torn lung, kidney and liver tissue and internal bruises.
Jordan’s roommate, senior Travis Bailer, said Jordan’s lung collapsed in the accident but was later reinflated. Bailer also said that when Jordan gets out of the hospital he will have to stay in the ASU infirmary for at least 12 days.
Jordan is supposed to graduate in December and missed an exam Tuesday, according to his roommate.
Sergeant Vines of the Boone Police Department said Lee was issued a citation for safe movement. Safe movement involves the stopping, starting and turning of a vehicle.
Vines said Jordan could also be cited and assessed a $50
fine for violation of the town’s policy on wearing helmets. Jordan has
not been issued the fine, as of Wednesday.
