“The Foreigner”

Travel to southern Georgia with Larry Shue’s farce, “The Foreigner.”  The play will be presented Feb. 18-22 by the Department of Theater and Dance.

“The Foreigner” tells the story of what happens when an Englishman is brought to Georgia by his friend.  After a series of misunderstandings, people believe the Englishman to be a foreigner who does not speak English.

Performances begin at 8 p.m. in the Valborg Theater.

Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for others.

Appalachian Friends Book Sale
 

A new book sale will be held Feb. 25-27 in Room 119 of Belk Library, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The sale offers discounts of up to 40 to 70 percent on books.

Proceeds go to purchase materials for Belk Library.

Visiting Writers Series
 

Juanita Tobin will discuss how poetry keeps the soul active Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.

The discussion will be held in the Meeting Room of the New Watauga County Library.

A reception sponsored by the Friends of the Watauga Library will follow the discussion.

The New Watauga County Library is located at 140 Queen St.

African-Americans in  Appalachia
 

Dr. William Turner will present “African Americans in the Appalachians” tonight at 7 p.m.

His talk will be held in Room 407 Sanford Hall.

Turner is a nationally recognized expert on the black experience in the mountains.  He has a weekly syndicated column titled, “Lift Every Voice” that is published in black newspapers across the nation.

Admission is free.

Gay Beyond College
 

A panel discussion will be presented for gay, lesbian and bisexual students and interested allies Thursday, Feb. 19.

It will be held at 7 p.m. in the Multicultural Center in the Plemmons Student Union.

The audience will hear from two couples who have been “out there” for a while.

Topics include long-term relationships and family matters.
