Orientation Director appointed

Pete Eubanks, Staff Writer

All students remember the mix of apprehension and anticipation the first morning of freshman orientation.

Holly Hinkle, a sophomore from Welcome, North Carolina, will help incoming students ease these feelings, as she has been selected as the 1998-99 Student Orientation Director for Phase I Orientation.

Hinkle will work in conjunction with the director of orientation, the director of academic advising and the director of testing during the 1998 Summer and Fall Orientation Program and the 1999 Spring Orientation Program.

Hinkle was part of the 20-member Orientation Leader staff last year.

Hinkle said she is excited and hopes to  strenghten her existing leadership skills.

“I’m really excited, because I’m thinking of the transition (of jobs) and working with (the different directors),” said Hinkle.

According to Hinkle, many transfer students and approximately 2,000 freshmen came through ASU orientation last summer.

Although many freshmen ask strange questions, meeting incoming freshmen is the best part of her job, according to Hinkle.

Following Spring Break, she will begin her duties by helping to conduct training sessions for the orientation leader staff.

Michele Riggsbee, the Director of Orientation, said Hinkle’s growth and success as a leader last year was noticed and contributed to her selection.

Hinkle will be serving as a mentor to new members and will co-lead team meetings each session to provide feedback on session activities, including successes and problems, said Riggsbee.

According to Director of Academic Advising, Carter Hammett McGary, Hinkle worked with many types of new students last year, including an older group ranging  from 25 to 55.

“She has the ability to cross age and gender lines and be respectful of people’s needs and dignities,” said McGary.
