Entrance to ASU Street closed indefinitely
Lesslie Hitchcock, News Editor
Neither Appalachian State University nor the Town of Boone will accept responsibility for the land on which Locust Street lies, forcing the closing of one entrance to the university.
During the storm that occured on March 20, a piece
of land close to a section of Locust Street was washed away, thereby increasing
liability.
According to James Marsh of Hagaman Marsh Apartments, an attorney and an engineer advised that the street must be closed because no one claims responsibility for the erosion.
Marsh said that because the land is in his name, he will have liability for all possible accidents.
This fact is what prompted him to close the road, Marsh said.
“(Appalachian) won’t pay for the repairs and neither will the Town of Boone,” said Marsh.
“The barricade is easy to take down,” said Marsh. “When someone claims responsibility, we’ll be happy to take it down.”
“It’s been our privilege to allow the students to use the streets and we want to continue it.”
University representatives were unavailable for comment.
