Last senate meeting, passing the gavel

Katie Ward, Staff Writer

In their final meeting of the semester, the Student Government Association said a ceremonial goodbye to a year of legislation, committees and “Restoring the Student Voice.”

President Fernando Little reflected on the past year in his State of the University Address. Little believes that this has been a “year of progress for the student voice.”

Little was proud to inform the student senate that 100 percent of the platform goals set by himself and Vice
President Jake Parker were successfully accomplished.

These goals included residence hall suggestion boxes, mandatory RSA and town hall meetings for the senators, diversity training, Operation Outreach, an improved Mountaineer Escort service and the discount card, which Little believes is the “Superman of all discount cards.”

Breakfast with Borkowski was also a platform goal that became a reality and one of the Chancellor’s favorite pastimes, Little said.

Taking a moment to reflect on and thank the individual committees, Little said that all of the senators went above and beyond the call of duty.

Little also took a moment to remember the Cabinet and thank them for their efforts in “raising the bar.”
“They have been the backbone of this organization, and they complimented the senators’ hard work well,” Little said.

Little concluded his address by examining several “opportunities” or areas for improvement.  He feels it is important to involve those students not directly effected or benefitted by SGA’s presence.

“We want them to know that we are here to serve them,” Little said.

Little also hopes that future senates can minimize distractions or anything that may take their focus off of their constituents.

His final suggestion is to continue the effort to foster and cultivate campus and community relationships.

Little also hopes that involvement in the Boone chamber will continue.

In his final moments as president, Little took the opportunity to thank the senators, the cabinet and his constituents for allowing his number one priority of restoring the student voice to be accomplished.

“Thank you for allowing me to serve as president,” Little said. “I would not trade this experience for the world.”

The final meeting closed with the ceremonial passing of the gavel. Parker gave a hand shake, his gavel and his position as he welcomed the vice president elect Christy Barrick to adjourn the meeting.
