Appalachian House

Stay at the Appalachian House in Washington, D.C., located three block behind the Capitol. Students, faculty, and staff can stay for $20 per person per night. Alumni and non-Appalachian persons can stay for $27 per person per night. Reservations can be made a year in advance. For reservations or additional information, contact the Instructional Technology Center at 262-2132.
 


SGA News

Anyone interested in being a senator for Student Government this year please come by the SGA office on the 2nd floor of the Student Union, room 215, and get an application.  Applications are due September 8th and elections will be held Sept. 9 and 10th.  There will be an information session on Aug. 31st in the Macrae Peak room of the Student Union at 8:30 pm.  Committee sign-ups are also beginning.  Come by the SGA office for more information.


The Greatest Show on Turf

Appalachian faculty and staff can become “Stars” of the Greatest Show On Turf—Appalachian Football ‘98—and win great prizes from Appalachian Athletics and the University Bookstore!

Wear your Greatest Show On Turf button to the University Bookstore Computer Shop the Thursday and Friday (by noon) before each ASU home football game to collect that week’s “Star” for your button. A winner will be drawn for 2 tickets to that weekend’s home football game from all faculty/staff who receive that week’s star PLUS the winner will receive an Appalachian Football t-shirt from the University Bookstore (Season ticket holders who win receive 2 “Gold Seat” tickets!). All faculty/staff who receive all 5 different “Stars” before each home football game will be entered into a November drawing to receive an Appalachian Basketball t-shirt from the University Bookstore PLUS their choice of either men’s or women’s basketball season tickets!

The Ninth Annual Walk for Awareness will be held on Tuesday, September 8, beginning at 9:00 p.m. Details will be announced in the near future.

Office of Student Judicial Affairs

The Office of Student Judicial Affairs is currently accepting applications for the position of Assistant Student Judicial Counselor.  Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.  This position would be an excellent opportunity for students wishing to pursue careers in public administration, criminal justice, counseling, or law.  This position entails assisting students in preparing for Judicial Board Hearings, coordinating student community service work, and performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Judicial Affairs.  The hiring rate for this position ranges from $5.15/hr. to $6.00/hr. and will require 10 to 15 hours of work per week.  Call 262-2704 and ask for Justin or stop by the Office of Judicial Affairs on the second floor of the Student Union for more information.


Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education is a planned learning process that integrates academic study with work experience in a field related to your academic major. You can put classroom theories into practice by spending two or more academic terms doing paid work in a professional, career-related position.

Women’s Center News

We will open for business on August 31 at 11:00 a.m. Our hours will be Monday-Thursday, 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Our grand opening will be Wednesday, September 16 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Reminder to WC volunteers: Please call CSIL at 262-6252 to confirm your plans to attend training August 28-30. Volunteers will meet to depart on Friday, August 28 at 4:45 p.m. at the AppalCart stop across from the bookstore on College Street.
 


New Computer-Based Testing Center

Need to take the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and/or PRAXIS (Pre-Professional Skills Test) this fall? Test at your convenience at Appalachian’s new Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Center!

Students will have the opportunity to schedule computerized testing by calling the CBT Center here on campus at 262-6801. Advantages include flexible scheduling and immediate scoring with official scores in 10-15 days.

The CBT Center is located on the second floor of Annas Student Services Building (above the post office). The CBT Center will be open beginning September 1. The hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays; 8:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. University Tutorial Services

If you anticipate having some academic difficulties or just want to do your best in a course by working with a tutor University Tutorial Services (UTS) provides Appalachian students with a number of different tutoring offerings: Individual & small group sessions once or twice a week in the UTS lab, a number of drop-in labs on campus where you may receive help without an appointment, and SI (Supplemental Instruction) for Biology & Chemistry coursework. A number of paid tutoring positions (for upperclassmen) will also be available for Fall 98 for qualified applicants. Tutorial Services is housed in the Learning Assistance Program in Room 200 D.D.
