Well, it won’t be long until the time comes around again for everyone to register for classes for next semester. And the crucial question for everyone who is trying to graduate within two years of the planned four is: Will you get the classes that you need for your major?
You see, the recent philosophy here at Appalachian State is recruit more students and then don’t supply the available residence or class space for the extra recruits.
Although all departments are carrying the burden, the people that
seem to have it the worst are all the future teachers out there who are
attempting to take classes in the college of education, which is
so popular that the classes are full. It seems nothing is being
done to lessen the blow.
Instead, we now offer the history of NASCAR class, for example, instead
of more classes for the suffering education majors who have to wait until
their senior years or beyond in order to meet their
requirements for graduation.
Now, we can argue about the socially redeeming value of this new addition until the cows come home, but it won’t solve the problem of class size and availability for obviously more applied fields.
Also, let’s not forget the Philosophy and Religion department. You would think that these areas would command respect from the university, but not only have they been combined into one department, but if you choose this as your concentration of study, be prepared to have your patience tested, as well.
The seminar and colloquium classes, both required for a degree, are only offered at one time during one of the two semesters. In other words, if you want to graduate on time, and you have a conflict between times for your important classes, you will just have to wait sometimes a full year until you can get it, if there’s room available.
It is quite obvious what the university officials decide to spend our money on: the convocation center, fast food franchises, and a new math and science building.
There’s nothing wrong with this, but if they continue to recruit more
students, then we need to take care of some very important loose ends:
PARKING, DORM SPACE, and CLASS AVAILABILITY!!
