Homecoming 1998
The tradition continues

A parade, campus-wide tailgating party and the crowning of the 1998 Homecoming King and Queen took place Saturday, Nov. 7. 

     The Appalachian State football team played the Virginia Military Institute at 2 p.m., Saturday. Appalachian defeated VMI, 51-0, in a decided Homecoming victory which attracted 18,393 fans. 

     The 1998 Homecoming King court consisted of Parker Henderson, Byron Massey, Jay Nathan, Paul Pokorney and Warren Potts. 

     Homecoming nominees for Queen were Holly Arnold, Whitney Cole, Diane Dukes, Maria Poindexter and Summer Vassey. 

     Winning the 1998 Homecoming King and Queen titles were Massey and Poindexter.  Massey represented the Theta Chi fraternity and Poindexter represented the Student Yosef Club. 

     Jason Yepko and Jennifer Mitchell, the 1997 Homecoming King and Queen, and Chancellor Francis T. Borkowski honored Massey and Poindexter with their titles. 

     This year, campus organizations turned in 66 nominations for Homecoming King and 68 nominations for Queen. 

     Winners from the popular banner competition were APPS for the university funded organizations, Alpha Phi in the Greek section and for the campus clubs the Association of Non-Traditional Students placed first. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 


     On Duck Pond Field Friday night, a pep rally was held in which students took part in lip synch and a bonfire.The annual Homecoming parade began at a new time this year. Students turned out at 10 a.m. on Saturday to see the parade, which started on Rivers Street near Raley Hall. 

     Student organizations entered in the parade, even with the significant time change, with 48 floats and 53 walking groups.

     The float competition was widely participated in drawing entries from clubs, Greek organizations and university funded organizations.  Judging the Greek floats, Chi Omega and Kappa Alpha took first place.  The ASU Cloggers came in first place for the campus clubs level, while the Appalachian Ambassadors placed first in the university funded organizations section.

     Placing in the walking group competition were Coffey Hall, coming in first place, Boey and Eggers halls coming in second and third place respectively. 

     Winning the university funded organization kazoo band competition was SGA. 

     A campus-wide tailgating party appealed to campus organizations and alumni. Approximately 30 student organizations participated with food and fun on Duck Pond Field.
