for you. The CAP office is currently seeking Student Assistants for the
upcoming 1999 - 2000 school year. Student Assistants work in residence
halls from midnight to 5 a.m. The starting pay for CAP Student Assistants
is $5.35 per hour. If you are interested or have any questions, please

ROTC
Sponsors Mountaineer May Day 5K
The Appalachian State University ROTC program will sponsor
the ASU Mountaineer May Day 5K race on Saturday, May 1, at 8:30 a.m. You
can pick up an application at Plemmons Students Union, the Quinn Center,
Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center, or at the ROTC Department. Complete the application
and drop it off at the race table in the Student Union on April 22, 26,
28, or 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or at ASU ROTC in D.D. Dougherty, Room
204. Preregistration for students and military personnel is $7. For all
others, preregistration is $10. Make checks payable to ASU ROTC. Race day
registration starts at 7 a.m. at the Raley parking lot, at the Rivers Street
entrance. There will be free food and drinks after the race. Participants
will also be eligible for a t-shirt, prizes and gift certificates. For

Be a Wellness
Peer Educator
The Wellness Center is now accepting applications for
fall 1999. Wellness Peer Educators are required to attend training and
meet on a weekly basis at noon on Fridays. Wellness Peer Educators present
programs to their peers on the following topics: alcohol and drug issues,
safe sex, stress management, nutrition and fitness, personal safety, and
relationships. The deadline for applications is April 30. If you are interested
in becoming a Wellness Peer Educator or would like more information, please
come by the Wellness Center or call 262-3148. The Wellness Center is next
door to the infirmary on the second floor of the Miles Annas Student Services
Building.
Registration
and Schedule Adjustment for Summer
Students who missed the early registration for either
summer session may register on April 29 and 30. For those of you who need
to make schedule adjustments, you may do so at this time.
Federal
Stafford Loan Deadline
May 5 is the deadline for submitting a Federal Stafford
Loan application to the Office of Student Financial Aid for processing
for the academic year or spring 1999. If you are applying for a Federal
Stafford loan for this academic year, you must have the loan application
to our office by May 5. We are unable to certify a loan application for
1998-99 after May 5. Contact your financial aid counselor is you have any
questions.

Credit
Work in the Women’s Center for academic credit. We have
internship, practica and independent study opportunities for both graduate
and undergraduate students for the Fall 1999 semester. If you are interested
in getting practical experience with programming, outreach, and education,

and staff. Most trips are designed to accommodate beginners. All prices
include costs of instruction, technical equipment, transportation, and
food.

The Outing Center is open Monday - Friday, 1 - 5 p.m. Come early, as many

CPR Recertification
Workshop
The teachers and instructors of first aid and CPR in
the Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science are administering
a CPR recertification workshop in Broome-Kirk Gym Room 302, the first aid
and CPR laboratory classroom. The workshop is Thursday, April 29 from 3:30
to 5:30. Bring your current red cross CPR card with you, plus $2 in cash
and exact amount. If you have any questions, call Dr. Jim Avant at 262-6300,
otherwise, report to the classroom at that time.
Financial
Aid Notification
Continuing and returning Appalachian students who applied
for financial aid for the award year 1999-2000 by the March 15 priority
processing deadline should receive a financial aid award letter by mid-June.
In order for students to receive the award letter, they must apply for
financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
or a Renewal FAFSA and have complete data on file in the Office of Student
Financial Aid. Award letters will be mailed to the student’s permanent
address.
If you have any questions regarding your financial aid
application for fall 1999 and spring 2000, please contact your financial
aid counselor.

summer? Test at your convenience at Appalachian’s Computer-Based Testing
(CBT) Center! If you would like to schedule a time to test, please call
the CBT Center at 262-6801. Advantages include flexible scheduling
and immediate scoring with official scores in 2-3 weeks.
Our hours this summer will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday
through Friday, and selected Saturdays during June, July, and August.
Spring Plant Sale
The Biology Department Greenhouse will be holding the
Twentieth Annual Spring Plant Sale on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, from
noon until 6 p.m., starting on April 27 and continuing through May 13,
at the new facility located off State Farm Road near the Greenway Trail
and intramural fields. Plant selections will include annuals, perennials,
tropical foliage, and flowering baskets. Plant care information will also
