Nominations
sought for Plemmons Award
The W.H. Plemmons Leadership Medallion, named in honor of Dr. William
H. Plemmons who served as the second president of Appalachian State University
from 1955 to 1969, was established by the ASU Board of Trustees in 1996.
The award was created to recognize the time, energy, skills, and commitment
of students, faculty, student development educators and staff who exceed
their peers in providing leadership that enrishes the quality of student
life and advances the education of students.
Students and university employees are invited to nominate a student or university employee for this award. Nominations may be made in the following categories:
1. A student leader who has provided distinguished leadership above
that of other student leaders.
2. A Student Development Educator within the Division of Student Development
for meritorious leadership in his or her work to enrish the quality of
student life and learning.
3. A member of the faculty who has provided meritorious leadership
through his or her work with student clubs or organizations, or work that
enriches the quality of student life and learning outside the classroom.
4. An employee of Appalachian State University upon showing that he
or she has provided meritorious leadership which has significantly enriched
the quality of student life and learning outside the classroom.
The process for selecting recipients will be as follows:
1. A seven-member committee appointed by the Chancellor will solicit
and review nominations and recommend recipients of the W.H. Plemmons Leadership
Medallion to the Chancellor who will submit the recommendations to the
Board of Trustees for their review and approval.
2. The committee will screen the nominations and seek relevant supporting
information concerning nominees chosen for further consideration.
3. This process will take place annually and leadership medallions
will be awarded during the Fall Semester Convocation. It is understood
that the medallion is intended to recognize meritorious leadership and
may not be awarded each year.
4. Nomination forms may be obtained in the Office of Student Development,
B.B. Dougherty Administration Building, or from the Faculty/Staff Resources
Section of the Appalachian Homepage.
5. Nominations for this award will be accepted until Feb. 16, 2000.
All nominations should be sent to the Office of Student Development. Nominations
should not be sent electronically.

Financial
Aid Information Fair Jan. 27
The Office of Financial Aid will sponsor its 2nd annual Financial Aid
Information Fair on Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Plemmons Student Union from
11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The fair will provide information regarding applying for financial aid for summer 2000, fall 2000 and spring 2001. Special procedures for study abroad will also be available. Representatives from many of the financial institutions that service student loans will be available to discuss their services with students.
Orientation
leaders for Phase 1 sought
The Office of General Studies will seek applications for Student Orientation
Leaders through Feb. 4. This is a paid position, $1,200.00, room
and some meals provided. Employment dates are: June 25 - July 29;
Aug. 13-14; Jan. 3-4, 2001. If you are interested in this leadership
position, pick up an application between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in 154 Rankin
Hall or go on-line to www.appstate.edu/www_docs/gstudies for a printable
application. An information session for these positions will also be held
on Monday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m., in MacRae Peak Room, Plemmons
Student Union.
Service
award nominations sought
The Alumni Affairs Office is seeking nominations for the Outstanding
Service Awards, which recognize individuals for their exceptional service
to the university. Examples of outstanding service are:
serving on any board or council dedicated to the progress of Appalachian
State University, assisting with alumni functions or related university
events, promoting Appalachian in the community through teaching or fund
raising, providing financial support, and contributing time or energy to
the betterment and development of Appalachian. Candidates may not
be current Appalachian employees or on the alumni council. The awards
will be presented at the Spring Fling Awards Banquet on April 28, 2000.
The nomination deadline is Jan. 27. Please call the Alumni Affairs
Office at 2038 for a nomination form.
Fluency
Support Group set for Feb. start
The Communication Disorders Clinic at Appalachian State University
is pleased to announce the formation of a Fluency Support Group.
This group is for those who experience a communication disorder called
“stuttering”. The group is open to anyone, regardless of age, who stutters.
The purpose of the group is to provide anyone who is experiencing a fluency
disorder with intervention, support, and a chance to interact with and
meet those who have similar concerns. There is no charge for participation
in the group. The group will meet the first and third Tuesdays of
the month, beginning in February. Meetings will be in room 123 in
Edwin Duncan Hall on the ASU campus. Meetings will begin at 6:30
p.m. and last approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours. If you would
like additional information about this group or would like to sign up to

MLK
program scheduled for Tuesday
Appalachian State University’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration
Program is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Grandfather
Mountain Ballroom of Plemmons Student Union. The guest speaker is Kevin
Powell, perhaps best known for his stint on the first year of MTV’s successful
docu-soap “The Real World.” Powell is also known for his work as cultural
critic with Vibe magazine and as the author of the recently pubished and
critically acclaimed collection of essays, “Keepin’ It Rreal--Post MTV
Reflections on Race, Sex, and Politics.” The Black Gospel Choir will render
selections during the program. The MLK Commemoration is cosponsored by
the offices of Multicultural Student Development and Cultural Affairs.
Spring
Diversity Series to kickoff Jan. 25
The Appalachian State Univesity Diversity Series will begin Tuesday,
Jan. 25, at 5 p.m. in the Multicultural Center in Plemmons Student Union.
The first program, “Myths and Stereotypes of Differently Abled Individuals,”
will expose audience members to learning, physical and mental disabilities
that members of our community have. It is a goal that attendees will leave
this session with a better understanding of the challenges that differently
abled individuals face and things each of us can do to address myths and
stereotypes that are held about differently abled people.
Other Diversity Series programs are:
“Let My People Go: The Trials of Bondage in Words of Master and Slave,” an original theatre piece based on petitions to southern county courst and state legislatures during the time of slavery. The piece is a production of theTouring Theatre Ensemble of North Carolina. The program will be in the Linville Falls Room of Plemmons Student Union, Feb. 3, 7 p.m.
“Examining Myths and Stereotypes,” Tuesday, Feb. 29, 5 p.m., in the Multicultural Center of Plemmons Student Union.

Day schedule set
The Spring Assessment "Focus" Day will be held Thursday, Jan. 20. All
classes for undergraduate students are canceled until 5:00 p.m. that day.
Undergraduate classes that start at 5:00 p.m. or later that day will meet
as scheduled. Graduate level classes are held as scheduled all day.
