“A good leader is confident, a risk-taker, can communicate and relate to people and creates a healthy, social, spiritual and academic balance in their life,” said Dr. Jim Street, Assistant Center Director of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership.

Emerging Leaders 2000 is a program for undergraduate students to learn valuable leadership skills for personal growth and development through experimental activities and discussion groups.

This program introduces a new perspective about leadership. A leader is one that builds others through service, creating change and developing an organization and the people involved.  “Leadership is not a position, but a process,” said Street.

The program begins on Feb. 2 and proceeds through eight topics of leadership: Notions of Leadership, The Great Balancing Act, Leadership Styles, Communication, Leadership and Service, Building Confidence, Personal Leadership Plans and the Closing Banquet.  An overnight retreat is also planned.

Students wishing to participate can acquire a form from the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership and sign up for an interview Jan. 24-27.  The deadline for application is Jan. 21.

The program is offered through sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays until March 30.  Both sessions will be scheduled from 4-6 p.m. in the Student Union.

“I learned a lot about myself and how to work with others,” said Tonya Leach, former participant and current student coordinator.

“This program teaches the benefits of working with others and I applied this to my school work and everyday life.  It is interactive learning led by students,” said Jared Parker, also a former participant and current student coordinator.

“This program offers many opportunities to see how others view the world and helped me gain perspective,” said Jennifer Haltli, a student coordinator.

If you would like to participate in Emerging Leaders 2000, acquire an application from the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership on the second floor of the Student Union.  For more information, contact Jim Street at 262-6252.
