Camp Job Fair scheduled
Interested in working at a summer camp? Camp representatives from
across the country will be excited to meet you on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Plemmons Student Union. Not sure about the tremendous

on Monday, Feb. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. for an informative presentation.
Co-op
orientation sessions scheduled
Cooperative Education is a planned learning process that integrates
academic study with work experience in a field related to your academic
major. You can put classroom theories into practice by spending two
or more academic terms doing paid work in a professional, career-related
position.
Cooperative Education opportunities are available during the spring,
summer and fall terms. Students who want to participate in
Co-op are required to attend an orientation session. Join us at an

Computer-Based
Testing Center
Need to take the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and/or PRAXIS-I this spring?
Test at your convenience at Appalachian’s Computer-Based Testing (CBT)
Center. If you would like to schedule a time to test, please call
the CBT Center at 262-6801. Advantages include flexible scheduling
and immediate scoring with official scores in 2-3 weeks. Testing hours
this spring semester are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30
p.m.. Friday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday
hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Fluency
Support Group set for Feb. start
The Communication Disorders Clinic at Appalachian State University
is pleased to announce the formation of a Fluency Support Group.
This group is for those who experience a communication disorder called
“stuttering”. The group is open to anyone, regardless of age, who stutters.
The purpose of the group is to provide anyone who is experiencing a fluency
disorder with intervention, support, and a chance to interact with and
meet those who have similar concerns. There is no charge for participation
in the group. The group will meet the first and third Tuesdays of
the month, beginning in February. Meetings will be in room 123 in
Edwin Duncan Hall on the ASU campus. Meetings will begin at 6:30
p.m. and last approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours. If you would
like additional information about this group or would like to sign up to

Center programs available
These Counseling and Psychological Services Center groups are designed
to provide growthful experiences for both students who want to resolve
specific concerns and those who generally want to enhance the quality of
their interactions with others and feel better about themselves. To arrange
to participate in a group or for more information, contact the Counseling
and Psychological Services Center at 262-3180. Groups are:
Understanding Self and Others (3 group times: Tuesday, 3:30 ? 5:00; Wednesday, 4:00 ? 5:30; Thursday, 3:30 ? 5:00): Members explore patterns of relating to self and others with the aim of developing greater understanding and acceptance of themselves and others. Presenting issues vary widely from depression, anxiety, difficulties relating to/accepting self or others, issues of family conflict or abuse, etc. Students who want to resolve specific concerns as well as those seeking personal growth are welcome.
Understanding Self and Others ? For Women (Monday, 3:30 ? 5:00): Same as the above, for those who want the support of an all female group.
Act-ing on Body Images (Tuesday, 3:30 ? 5:00): A group for students with concerns about their body image and negative feelings about self.
Chronic Illness Group (Monday, 3:30 ? 5:00): Do you have an ongoing medical condition? How about someone about whom you care deeply? Would it be helpful to discuss your thoughts and feelings with others? If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, you may benefit from these meetings. The Counseling Center and Wellness Center are combining talents to co-lead this group in the student Wellness Center. The co-leaders would like to meet with you before the start of the group to ask and answer questions. Please call 262-3180 for an appointment.
Rape Support Group (Wednesday, 5:00 ? 6:30, Yadkin River Room): This group is designed to offer support for those women who have experienced sexual trauma in dating relationships or with strangers. The group will meet Wednesdays from 5-6:30* starting January 19th in the Yadkin River Room of the Student Union. (*Note: There will be no meeting 2/2, 3/8, or 3/15.) Dream On (Tuesday, 5:30 ? 7:30): This group is designed to help understanding yourself better and solve personal problems by exploring your own and others’ dreams. Your dreams can offer fascinating reflections on your past, your waking life, and your personality. Tap into their potential as a valuable resource for self-growth and making positive changes in your life.
Therapeutic Weekend for Self Enhancement (Friday, March 24th, 5:30pm ? Sunday, March 26th, 5:00pm): This group will be a 21 hour intensive therapeutic experience for those who are committed to self-exploration to enhance knowledge, understanding and acceptance of self, improve styles of relating to self and others, and overcome problems or blocks that limit personal potential.
Cultural Identity Encounter Group (Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5): This group is designed to help members develop a greater understanding of themselves and others. Particularly, members will explore their own cultural identity and how their conceptualization of “culture” and “race” affects their interaction with others. People of ALL cultural backgrounds are welcome.
Family, Addictions and You (Thursday, 4 ? 5:15): Support for students affected by a family member or partner’s alcohol or drug addiction. This will be an open discussion group addressing such topics as family enabling, survival roles, self-care, substance abuse, etc. Meetings will be held in the Wellness Center—call 262-3148 to register and set up an initial interview with the group leader, Dale Kirkley.

The Learning Assistance program offers weekly workshops designed to

media seeks leaders for 2000-2001
The Student Media Board of Appalachian State University seeks applicants
for editor in chief of The Appalachian and station manager for 90.5 The
App (WASU) radio. Editor applications are available in the Center for Student
Involvement and Leadership, Plemmons Student Union. Station manager applications
are available through the Department of Communication, Walker Hall. Deadline
for applications is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29. For more information, call

Chinese
New Year to be celebrated at ASU
A celebration of the Chinese New Year will be held Saturday, Feb. 5,
in the Family and Consumer Science Building, next door to the Student Union,
on the second floor, from 6 until 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and will be
sold in the Student Union from Jan. 31 until Thursday, Feb. 3. Ticket sale
hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets will not be available at the door.
There will be food, entertainment and fun. The celebration is sponsored
by the ASU Chinese Club and the Office of International Programs.

Any student who entered Appalachian State University as a new freshman
in the summer or fall of 1998, who did not complete assessment testing
on Jan. 20, 2000, will have make-up opportunities. Make-up sessions will
be held:

Study
the Holocaust this summer
Appalachian State University professor, Dr. Rennie Brantz of the Department
of History, will lead a summer study trip to France and Germany, May 20-June
11. The program is open to students and adult learners and will focus on
the Nazi Holocaust within the context of European culture and society.
An informational meeting about the trip will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 9, in Room 223 in Whitener Hall.
Participants may earn six hours of academic credit for the two courses offered: History 3533-The Nazi Holocaust, and History 3534-Film and the Holocaust.
The traveling seminar departs from Charlotte on May 20 and will spend the first week in Strasbourg, France, living and holding classes in the 18th century Chateau de Pourtales. Students will travel to Paris the first weekend to visit the Louvre, Versaille, and sites connected with World War II.
After a second week of classes in Strasbourg, the seminar will journey to bus sites in Germany related to the Holocaust and German culture. Included in the third week’s itinerary are visits to Munich, the Dachau concentration camp, Hitler’s Alpine Eagle’s Nest, and the courtroom in Nuremberg where postwar trials of Nazi war criminals were held. Stops in Rothenberg, Heidelberg, and Frankfurt will conclude the trip.

University Recreation at Appalachian State has introduced a new Personal
Trainer Program for students, faculty and staff.
The program is designed to provide participants with an assessment of their current fitness level, an exercise program that meets their specific needs, and assistance in achieving and maintaining their individual fitness goals.
The program includes several aspects that promote an individual workout for the participant that is designed for their unique lifestyles, habits, schedule, conflicts and program goals. The cost is $15 for the initial interview and $10 an hour for each individual training session. Several packages are available for five or 10 training sessions at a discount.
