Two
Appalachian State University fraternities have been suspended by university
officials in connection with a reported rape of a 14-year-old South Carolina
girl.
No arrests have been made in the reported rape at the Kappa Alpha Order
house Friday, Feb. 4.
Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu are suspended effective immediately, said Director
of Center for Student Involvement in Leadership Dino Dibernardi. The university
suspension is external to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Department investigation,
Dibernardi said.
The suspension will remain in effect until it has been reviewed by the
Interfraternity Council. IFC will then turn in a recommendation to CSIL
on their findings. Both organizations will only be able to hold business
meetings while the suspension is in effect.
Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu held a joint bid party that evening. “There
were a number of people (at the party); there are a lot of interviews to
be conducted,” said Capt. Paula Townsend of the Watauga County Sheriff’s
Department.
According to the investigation report taken by the Watauga County Sheriff’s
Department, the minor attended the party, consumed alcohol and was raped.
She told investigators she was grabbed and taken into a room where one
assailant hit her and took off her clothes and another raped her. “She
wasn’t able to give a description of anyone because it was dark,” said
Townsend.
Townsend estimates approximately 300-500 people attended the party.
An investigation is underway, said Townsend.
KA president Darren Pierce issued a statement on behalf of the fraternity.
“We are cooperating with the investigation,” he said.
“We’ve (the Kappa Alpha Order members) been instructed not to answer
any questions,” he continued.
Sigma Nu president Duncan Ham was unavailable for comment at press time.
