Google Earth produced a behind-the-scenes video about the campaign to end mountaintop removal in late October, giving special recognition to Appalachian Voices’ Matt Wasson and Benji Burrell for their work, among other “heroes.”
Google recognized Appalachian Voices for their use of Google Earth on their Web site ilovemountains.org to show damage from mountaintop removal.
In addition, Appalachian Voices was also awarded a spot in Good Magazine’s Top 100 for proving to be an excellent resource and leader in the movement to end mountaintop removal.

Our society is victim to what one could call consumerism.
A star-loving, red carpet wanting, civilization. A constant desire for “fame.”
Celebritiy-agnosis.
We can only concentrate on those who are rich, famous and have their pictures plastered on the cover of People magazine.

Registration at the university level requires planning and organization to be done by the students.
Although Appalachian State University students have mandatory meetings with advisers to receive advice and recommendations, the advisers guide students, but rely on students to know what they want to do.
Here lies the problem: for several freshmen, as well as some sophomores, deciding on a major seems difficult and will not happen until a little later in their academic careers.

In Tuesday’s edition of The Appalachian, there were several items that were incorrect and we feel it is necessary to set the record straight so there is no miscommunication or confusion about certain subjects.
The cover story in Tuesday’s edition read “Committee proposes 2010-11 tuition hike.” The committee in reference is the University Tuition Committee. This committee has been meeting, but has NOT made any proposal whatsoever. The very earliest this committee would have a proposal would be this Friday. All of the items that were discussed on the cover story were items the tuition committee will be voting on.
On page 7, under the “Our Perspective” section with the title “Tuition proposal on right track, requires further improvements” the piece talks about the tuition committee having an initial proposal and then creating a new one. We would just like to reiterate the Tuition committee will NOT have a proposal until this Friday at the earliest.
