The Appalachian State Mountaineers
took the court Friday night at the Holmes Convocation Center in their
first game of the season, an exhibition against the Mars Hill Lions.
The Mountaineers got off to
a quick start charging ahead of the Lions 20-9 early in the first half.
Appalachian depended on their outside shooters, as they made five three-pointers
in the first five minutes.
“I've said all along that
this team can shoot the ball, and they can shoot the ball,” head coach
Buzz Peterson said. “We just need to get guys well, and get them in
there. Our inside guy only made a couple points.”

The Appalachian: What have you changed about the program since you arrived?
Buzz Peterson: [Former head coach] Houston [Fancher] was my assistant so I’m sure we do a lot of the same things. I’ve been out of it for two years, so I’ve probably ran longer practices and paid attention to the little details that drive me crazy. When you’re out of it and miss it you just correct every little thing you see.
TA: What has been the area of focus in your practices?
BP:
I think this team can score, but I want them to get the mentality that
we can really shut people down on the defensive end. [Defense is] where
we’ve really put our focus through a lot of it.

As the men’s basketball team takes the floor tonight at Mountaineer Madness, Appalachian State’s basketball kickoff, all eyes will surely be on new coach Buzz Peterson and the 16 players on the 2009-10 roster.
A great deal of attention was placed on the retirement of Houston Fancher at the conclusion of the 2008-09 season, and even more attention surrounded the rehiring of former coach Buzz Peterson in April after a long coaching search.
Peterson coached at App from 1996-2000, winning three Southern Conference North Division championships, and leading the Mountaineers to an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
