Smile, bus riders. As of last week, you’re on camera.
AppalCART has installed a security camera on one of its buses on a trial basis and hopes to eventually have them on all vehicles, Operations Manager John Kirk said.
Verint Systems has offered to install a security system on one bus free of charge as a demo, Kirk said.
He said he was not sure what the cost would be to install systems on
every AppalCART vehicle because prices are constantly changing.
“It’s a trend nationwide,” Kirk said.
Because technology like security cameras has become less expensive over
the years, more transit companies have installed security systems in
their vehicles, he said.
A camera system was installed in a bus on the Gold Route last week. It has not been activated yet, Kirk said.
Kirk said the security cameras would serve in a “preventive” capacity
and provide video footage should an accident occur on one of the
vehicles.
“It’s an attempt to improve our service,” he said.
According to Verint’s Web site, “Verint Networked Video Solutions
enable government and commercial organizations to enhance the security
of their facilities and protect people, property and assets.”
Its products “are designed to deter terrorism and crime, increase
operational efficiency, and improve organizational efficiency,”
according to the Web site.
