Incumbent
P. Jud Watkins and vice presidential candidate Jamarl D. Clark were
found in violation of pre-campaigning rules outlined in section 8.23 of
the elections by-laws at an SGA Judicial Board hearing Monday.
The Watkins-Clark ticket is appealing the decision to Center for
Student Involvement and Leadership Director Dino DiBernardi on the
basis of substantial violation of due process. The decision stands
unless DiBernardi overturns it.
“I do not believe the hearing was conducted fairly at all,” Watkins
said. “Jamarl was never informed of the time or location of the
hearing, and I did not receive final confirmation about the hearing
until literally two minutes before the hearing began.”
According to the by-laws, campaigning may not occur before the determined campaign period.
Watkins and Clark were said to have released specific campaign goals in
the March 9 edition of The Appalachian, nearly 11 days before
campaigning was set to begin, according to a release from the SGA
Judicial Board.
The Judicial Board unanimously found Watkins and Clark in violation due
to comments alluding to campaign goals made in the article.
The board determined the infraction was a minor violation and issued a written reprimand.
The Forrest S. Gilliam-Whitney E. Baker ticket and David C.
Humphrey-Gregory H. Pittman ticket brought charges against Watkins and
Clark.
