The results for Student Government Association president and vice president for the 2006-2007 school year were released Thursday, announcing a run-off between the Forrest
S. Gilliam-Whitney E. Baker and P. Jud Watkins-Jamarl D. Clark tickets.

Because none of the four tickets received a majority, the two tickets with the most votes go into a run-off, scheduled for next week.

A total of 2,881 students voted in this week’s election, a slight increase from last year’s 2,788 turnout.

Gilliam-Baker took 46 percent (1,344) of the votes, Watkins-Clark received 26 percent (751), David C. Humphrey-H. Greg Pittman 24 percent (700) and Jason S. Lubeznik-Patrick D. Kelly 2 percent (86).

Gilliam and Watkins will enter another week of campaigning for the run-off. Students can vote again Monday through Thursday. The winning ticket will be announced Thursday at 4 p.m.

Members of both tickets agreed on increased voter turnout as a goal in run-off campaigning.

“It is hard to get people to vote again, so we want to get word out that there is a run-off,” presidential candidate Gilliam said.

Gilliam said he is a little tired, but also glad for the opportunity for another week of campaigning.

“We will be trying to get people who are up for grabs,” Gilliam said.

Of their lead with 46 percent, Baker and Gilliam said they are very “honored and pleased” but take nothing for granted and are planning another strong week of campaigning.

“We will relax tonight, but tomorrow we are right back on it,” Gilliam said.

Watkins, who was attending a Board of Trustees meeting at the time of election results, was unavailable for comment.

Vice-presidential candidate Clark said his ticket plans to use a stronger version of the same campaign method in the run-off.

“We will reach out to students who have not been reached out to yet and catch them the second time around,” Clark said.

Clark said he plans to make a special effort to “talk to people one-on-one” next week.
