Legends

From booking major acts to accommodating fans, Legends is the best
place to see a concert in Boone, as voted by Appalachian State
University students.
The venue has been around since the mid-’80s but has undergone some changes over the years.

At first, students had a contest to come up with the name, settling
with H’APPYS to pay homage to the school’s nickname at the time,
“happy appy.”
“When I was hired they sought additional funding to make the building
first class,” Legends’ Program Advisor and Manager Randy Kelly said.
“The first night at Legends we had this Beatles cover band, which was
one of the bigger party bands in the state, come in.”
Legends, which is located next to Hoey Residence Hall on the east side
of campus, has hosted such notable acts as Blues Traveler, Keller
Williams, OutKast, Dave Matthews, Hootie & the Blowfish, Widespread
Panic and Collective Soul. It has also hosted such comedians as Carrot
Top, Pauly Shore and Jimmy Fallon.
“We have the biggest dance floor in western North Carolina, other local
clubs don’t have the luxury of having that big of a floor,” Kelly said.
With the location, students can easily walk to shows and not have to
worry about finding a ride or the possibility of driving drunk.
Legends allows concertgoers to bring their own six packs without
charging. It is a non-smoking facility, but it does have a smoking area
outside.
The prices are reasonable and fit the tight budgets of an average college student.
“$3 is probably the least but, for music, we will not charge over $15,
that has been the highest we have ever done,” Kelly said. “We try to
keep it around $8 to $10 usually. Students have already paid the fee to
get those bands so it would be wrong to overcharge.”
Legends is usually open from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
