Theatre department, art school team up for drama workshops |

Appalachian’s Department of Theatre and Dance has joined forces with the Community Art School of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts to bring children Youth Drama Workshop beginning June 26.The workshop, coordinated by theatre educator Gordon Hensley, will present a week focused on creative drama and movement. Children and teens will be challenged to think creatively and encouraged to work collaboratively while exploring theatre and dance. The student to teacher ratio allows for ample supervision and plenty of support for each pupil. Teachers have personally developed the curriculum for every class with careful preparations as all activities are guaranteed to operate according to the North Carolina Standards for Theatre Education.
Presently, there are eight official standards that all classes will address including pantomime, drama games, storytelling, story drama, social drama, improvisation, process drama and puppetry.Classes will be held in IG Greer Theatre Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The lessons will be broken into three groups contingent upon age. Block one includes ages 6 to 8 and will work with students on topics like Silent Acting and Books Come Alive. Block two holds ages 9 to 12 and focuses on areas such as Building Interpersonal Skills and Create and Perform. Finally, block three is open to anyone age 13 and older and will concentrate solely on the theme of Teen Playwrights.“The kids should be ready to have fun!
