Superman Returns: blockbuster movie, lackluster talent Print E-mail

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No…it’s Superman!

Comic book addicts, as well as others, have anticipated Superman’s next move for some years.

The movie, “Superman Returns,” is speculated to be one of Hollywood’s biggest hits this summer and has already done well accumulating over $140 million.

But does the film actually do Superman justice?

The concept of the movie involves the return of the great Superman after a five-year visit to his home planet, Krypton.

During these years crime has risen, Lois Lane has tried to move on with her life and Lex Luther has been released from prison.

The movie assumes viewers are fully aware of the background story of Superman due to shows like “Smallville.”

The plot moves forward into a period of unrest and uncertainty even though Superman already has an established name in society.

This was a relief to me as someone who grew up watching “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and was ready for the next page in the Man of Steel’s life.

Once Superman returns and begins to portray himself as Clark Kent, he is astounded to learn of Lois Lane’s engagement and son.

She also claims to be completely disinterested in the return of Superman, as she has written several negative articles concerning his disappearance.

Superman is given little time to mourn as Lex Luther has formed yet another plot to take over the world.

Luther plans to create an entirely new continent while wiping out much of North America by shooting crystals that will rapidly expand into the Atlantic Ocean.

There is just one problem for Superman as he attempts to halt Luther’s schemes, the same problem that always surfaces: kryptonite, which will be one of the main minerals in Luther’s new land.

Will Superman be able to save the world just in the nick of time like normal?

Unlike most DC Comic films, this one was not slam packed with choppy, ridiculous dialogue and was actually quite intriguing during certain dramatic scenarios.

The cast was also filled with many highly acclaimed actors who put on convincing roles.

My favorite actor was Kevin Spacey as the intellectually-heightened, megalomaniac Lex Luther.

Also bringing the film to life was an amazing soundtrack that coincided with the plot brilliantly.

I was pleased to see that its producers did not cram as much action as possible into unnecessary crevices and instead focused on making a well-founded storyline.

On the other hand, I was less than impressed with the performance of the hero, played by the young and handsome, yet unknown, Brandon Routh.

While displaying a marvelous presence with his tall, chiseled body, his acting was unfortunately lacking.

While a new face in Hollywood can often be refreshing, there has got to be some talent to back it up, especially if he is playing such an iconic figure as Superman.
