Graffiti
and other forms of vandalism, such as damaged vehicles and sculptures,
have been on the rise in recent months. Seen here is one example found
outside of the Rankin Science Building. |
Seven of the 14 vandalisms were in August, opposed to only three in June and four in July.
University Police Chief Gunther Doerr said vandalism in the summer of 2006 increased from 2005 for both June and July.
Damage
to campus art has occurred several times this summer, including the
knocking over of sculptures near Duck Pond and Wey Hall.
Appalachian vehicles were also victims of vandalism.
In June, someone broke the drivers side mirror on an Appalachian
vehicle and another was dented while parked in the parking deck.
Other instances of vandalism include spray paint and graffiti on Sanford Hall and broken Plexiglas in an AppalCART shelter.
Lt. Eddie Rector, chief investigator for University Police, said all cases of vandalism on campus remain inactively pending.
This means there have been no leads or arrests.
According to the Boone Police Department, 46 cases of vandalism occurred in the city of Boone this summer.
However, vandalism in Boone remains consistent with no apparent summer increase.
Similar to those on the Appalachian campus, much vandalism in Boone
also involved damage to vehicles. Arrests resulted in some instances.
Boone Police Captain Curtis Main said he doubts college students do many of the vandalisms committed in Boone and on campus.
“Most students aren’t here over the summer,” Main said.
