The Student Recreation Center’s swimming pool was closed last month for repairs and will remain closed for an indefinite period of time until they are fixed.
The closing was in response to improperly laid tiles that allowed water to seep underneath them.
Up to 60 percent of the tiles are affected and, as a result, the surface area is being completely redone.
“We realize that the closing of the only pool on campus for
recreational and academic use is no small disruption and we apologize
for the inconvenience,” Joe Carter, director of university recreation
said.
“Many students use the facility and have been without a pool for the majority of the last year.”
Students are frustrated by the pool’s delays.
This is the fourth notification of the pool opening delay that the
Appalachian State University swim club has received, member Brian R.
Post said. “We have not had a place to practice in 11 months.”
Post said when the pool did open in April 2006, it was too late to begin swim practices.
Club President Kimberly F. Lomonaco said they were exploring
alternative facilities such as the Watauga County Swim Complex, but
without a discount, the cost per use at the public facility is $4 per
visit, and $40 per month.
“This is negatively effecting the team at this point … it is really
hard to recruit people without a place to swim,” Lomonaco said.
Office of Design & Construction Director, Clyde D. Robbins, said he
could not comment until the release of the swimming pool report, which
was not available as of press time.
The report itself will detail more exact figures of when the pool will reopen and how much the repairs will cost.
