Twenty-four works of art were recognized Friday at the Belk Library & Information Common’s Art Night. Artists were selected from over 80 southeastern students, professors and others.
“We are especially proud that the money people submitted in their application fees were put into a fund to buy student art for the library,” Associate University Librarian Larry Boyer said.
All contestants paid a $15 entry fee and were able to submit up to two works of art each.
The submitted artwork represented a variety of styles, media and quality.
The library is always looking for new student art to purchase, as long as it is within the budget.
Some of the artists came to Art Night to explain their work and answer
questions including Jay Hahn, Joseph Deutsch and Kerri L. Puckett.
Hahn, whose art was titled “Solitary Clematis,” is an artist in North
Carolina. Hahn took a picture with a digital camera then printed the
picture with pigment ink, which has been mistaken for a painting many
times.
Hahn entered this picture because he knew the library was looking to decorate, and thought his picture would work well.
Deutsch, a local resident, entered what was originally a watercolor
picture but is now an acrylic photo. He added acrylic paint to the
original watercolor to enhance the picture.
“If I can do it, you can do it,” Deutsch said to his wife, an artist, in order to encourage her to also enter the contest.
Puckett, a junior industrial technology major, submitted a black and
white photograph that he developed himself in his dark room.
The wide variety of art in the contest is now hanging on walls in the library.
The money for student art has not yet been spent and is on reserve.
It has not been decided whether or not to pursue an additional contest in the future.
