Appalachian attracts international students Print E-mail

Many may wonder what it is about Appalachian State University that attracts students from across an ocean.

“The students look for basically the same things that students in America look for; they pay close attention to college bulletins and do research,” Robert A. White, associate director of International Programs, said.

For many of the international students, there is a system where the school they attend is assigned.

Natalie Butterworth, a 22-year-old biology major from Yorkshire, England, was limited to five schools that offered the course combinations she needed.

“At home, we only study two subjects, and I needed to choose a school that would help me stick to those,” she said.

She ranked her top three schools and was then assigned to Appalachian State.

“You’ve just got to be grateful for where you get placed,” she said.

Athletes have a different set of guidelines when it comes to selecting an institution.

Ryan E. Brookshaw, a junior math major from South Africa, came to Appalachian on a tennis scholarship.

“I sent my videos and rankings to potentially interested schools,” he said.

Appalachian’s scenic location is another determining factor for international students.

“Being in the mountains gives me opportunity to participate in a lot of outdoor activities,” Tom Ireland, a 19-year-old history major from Shropshire, England, said.

“I cannot live without snow because I am from Russia,” Leonid Dulenkov, a 20-year-old marketing major from Nizhni Novgorod, Russia, said.

Dulenkov is a representative of International Trade and Small Business Institute along with 20 other international students.

Like many of his fellow international students, Dulenkov was placed at Appalachian.
However, he arrived with high expectations.

“According to my research, Appalachian offers a high level of marketing education, and most of all, ASU offers a great condition for international students,” he said.

The Institute of International Education recognized Appalachian State as one of the nation’s top 15 comprehensive universities in the number of undergraduates taking part in international education programs.
