Volleyball goes 1-2 in Lady Topper Invitational by DREW STEWART Intern Sports Reporter
The Appalachian State University volleyball team finished the Lady Topper Invitational Tournament with a win over Ball State University 3-1 (24-30, 30-22, 30-18, 30-28) Saturday.
Appalachian ended the tournament, hosted by Western Kentucky University, with a record of 1-2.
In the match against Ball State, freshman Cassie Engelgau assisted in the win with a career-high 42 digs.
Engelgau also moved into the ASU record books, as she ranked fifth in
single-game digs. This performance marked the fourth 30-plus digs game
in her short career at Appalachian.
Senior Chrissy Finch recorded her second consecutive double-double with
11 kills and 15 digs. Junior Lorelle Rau also had a double-double with
46 assists and 11 digs.
The offense was lead by Dianna Thomas with 16 kills.
Junior Brittany Zahn was voted onto the all-tournament team, earning 11
kills in the game. Zahn has scored double-digit kills in all 13 matches
of this season.
After a tough loss in the first game 30-24, the Mountaineers rallied to
win the next two games decisively, 30-22 and 30-18. Game four was a
rough contest with the Mountaineers fighting back from a deficit to win
30-28.
Appalachian now stands with a record of 7-6 on the season.
Appalachian returns home Friday for its Southern Conference home opener
against The Citadel. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.
Women’s soccer defeats Longwood in last minutes
The Appalachian State women’s soccer team won a nail-biter Sunday when they defeated Longwood University 2-1 in overtime.
Freshman Caroline Lowe scored a breakaway goal for the winning score with 28 seconds remaining in overtime.
Longwood took the lead in the 11th minute. Appalachian tied the match
in the 35th minute when freshman Jaclyn Hoffman scored the goal.
The Mountaineers out-shot the Lancers 34-10 in the game.
ASU now stands with a record of 3-4 and returns to action Friday against South Carolina State University in Boone.
Field Hockey shut out by Duke
Appalachian State University field hockey lost 0-7 to fifth ranked Duke University Friday.
The Blue Devils did not allow ASU a single shot.
Despite the high score, ASU senior goalie Mikayla Paulson stopped a career-high 22 shots.
Duke maintained a 15-0 advantage on penalty corners.
The field hockey team dropped to 0-6 on the season.
